Mosaic Records has a limited edition 6 CD box set of personal Tristano recordings that covers 1946 - 1970 that is definitely worth it for the Tristano fan. It is a shame there are so few single album releases and the bulk of the them are terrible recordings. Someone needs to start the Tristano remaster project. He was such an important player. It's a shame Rudy Van Gelder isn't still alive, I am sure he would have welcomed the opportunity to remaster his recordings.

Have to admit, I only heard of him today (thx to John F. Szwed in his book Jazz 101. "A name not known by most jazz fans (.....) but giants like Charlie Parker and Miles Davis had great respect for his work" That made me curious ... (of course !). And have to say after only a few songs i knew, i´ve to add this guy to my library .... Great stuff and interesting place in history !

Such an under-appreciated contributor to Jazz and, subsequently, music as it's been shaped.

Descent into the Maelstrom: Overwhelming...I've never heard such aggresion from a piano(-s), even from Peter Brötzmann's brutal 'Machine Gun'. Wonderful, acidy madness.
