“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

I agree, the Silmarillion doesn't read very smoothly compared to LOTR and especially the Hobbit, but the story(stories) itself are very interesting, and above all: epic. It fills the gap between the creation of Arda and the end of the Third Age, which would have been awkward not to have read. Unfinished Tales is also pretty vital, as it ties the three stories together.

I will playfully agree: Silmarillion > LOTR > The Hobbit [6] -- but this is also true: "Silmarillion = LOTR = The Hobbit. It's the same world, dont compare it!"

The 1968 BBC radio version of The Hobbit is brilliant - just the right atmosphere, not cinematic and overly-epic like the LOTR films (and the radio version of LOTR, to a lesser extent) were. I listened to the tapes of it all the time when I was younger and would highly recommend the CDs, especially as there's some extra music on them that's excellent.
