Interested people lean away from the album cut. I've not listened to much Fiona Apple until I heard this song on random and it got me into her whole discography. I wouldn't say this is my favorite after hearing everything but the vocal performance and atmosphere is still A+ to me. I'll check out the alternates!

The demo is superior. The official version is my least favourite song of Fiona, I just find it lacklustre and boring.

Ive always associated this song with the movie Punch Drunk Love. I doubt it`s directly and intentionally connected to it because most artistic expression is never "about" just one thing, but the fact that they both thematically concern contrasting/complementary colours and harmony/dissonance and being someone who obsessively tries to create meaning and reconciled understanding in things that might not necessarily have any (and that they both share Jon Brion as an important player lol) is an interesting overlap to me.

She doesn't understand complementary colors... at least wikipedia them, before you make a song. UGH.

Brion. I'm not averse to Red Red Red being slower and major-y-er, there's the seed of a brilliant song in there, but it's just how lifeless the synth is. I love it all the same, but my ear is too loyal for it's own good sometimes.

I like both versions. This one is simpler and more melancholy, while the Jon Brion version is more quirky and eccentric, but still amazing. She's so honest in this one.

"The unreleased version is excellent. I can't bear this slow-paced album version. This song looks dead compared to the energy and undeniable aliveness of the Jon Brion sessions... " @ialves I agree with a lot of that, the Brion sessions were amazing. I don't know if this version is THAT bad though you know?

I love the demo version. I don't really like the released version. I should give it another shot. She just seemed to veer off key with it. In my mind, I probably would like it if the demo was the album version and she did this slow burn of a remake of it for a single or a live version. That'd be fine but for some reason as-is, it just doesn't move me.

I loved the first version, except it really took a lot of listening to in order to fully comprehend, this one is a lot simpler to receive. However, the first production of this song, to me, is far superior. I guess the quirky and sometimes undefinable lyrics to the original is what made it most noncommercial. The first is definitely one to keep in mind if you like the second.
