Clay first sat down at the piano bench at the age of six, and was playing professionally by the time he was in the 7th grade.
One of his first gigs was a weekly performance at The Galleria in downtown Portland, Oregon. Soon afterward, he began playing at the Rose and Raindrop restaurant every Friday night. For four years, he entertained the locals at this historic pub, between his performances at weddings and church services. Clay also played as part of the Little House Band, which provided live music for an Imago Theater production.
He recorded his first album, Pedals, during these formative years in Portland.
In 2002, Clay and his wife moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where Clay began attending a Lutheran Seminary. Within a year, Clay had recorded Spirit and Truth, which features his improvisational covers of old hymn favorites.
During his last year of Seminary, Clay released Little Blue Houses—an album inspired by the long cold winters of the Upper Penninsula.
Clay began playing at the Michigan House Restaurant every Friday night, and has been enjoying the audience there for three years. Clay's latest album, Still Life, was recorded after hours at the Michigan House.
In addition to his solo work, Clay plays keyboards in an experimental jazz group called Tatterdemalion.
Currently, Clay works as a youth and family minister at the Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hancock, Michigan, and plays his marble game, Bullies, whenever he gets a chance.
