i think i have most of his albums ... the modern stuff he does is much different than his 70s folk albums ... it's all cool though

I don't know the Red Sparrows - what are they like? Loscil on vinyl - that would be a nice addition, but I understand the dilemma in owning both CD and Vinyl - that is one less album you could have bought by someone else. But then being a completist is so reassuring, at least for me! I think I may have mentioned it is my dream of owning all the Kranky catalog. I am about 55-60% of the way there so far, however a few signings have made me question this (sorry, I'm not a fan of White Rainbow or Bird Show...)!

Great news that you will see Loscil! (I assume in Vancouver? Or is he heading across to Victoria?) I listened to a snippet of the track with Dan Beja, and yep agree completely - it doesn't sound too good. There is nothing faster to transport one back to their teenage years than spoken word poetry over music! Just look at The Doors!

Starsandsons - a wonderful album - still holds up. They were a v exciting part of me moving to Toronto the first time in 99/00 - a band that were pretty much the second coming of MBV. Their album launch for that album was excellent - The Peter Parkers, Aerial Love Feed (whose EP I bought that night I still enjoy from time to time) and MRS. A great night! Were you there by chance? Or were you out west at that point?

If you get the chance, listen to the track "We Want War" by These New Puritans in headphones. Easily the best track I have heard in the past year, but I am thinking maybe the last 5. I have not heard anything this startling before. Graeme from Bark Psychosis is on board as well which makes it very exciting to hear his contributions, and J Dilla's mix engineer mixed it. V v v v impressive.

Excellent! Reznor safety in numbers! He really is incredible I think. Push comes to shove: my favorite artist in the world. (As my stats prob suggest as well!). The mind boggles of what could happen if he and Jonny Greenwood teamed up... Also, push comes to shove: the worst lyricist of the past 20 years! He is like a little girl with a stubbed toe! :-)

Agreed re Kinski. I really like (title wise) "Argentina Turner", "Passed Out On Your Lawn" and "She Always Make Us Work Like Dogs". Whilst derivative at times, I think they are pretty solid, in particular with the Acid Mothers Temple split and their "Airs Above Your Station" album. Very impressive live - a cross between Nirvana "In Utero" period and Mogwai (of course!)

The neck and neck battle of the Rheostatics vs Yo La Tengo for number one Binary Boy LAST FM place continues. THIS is the real story happening in Vancouver/Victoria Feb, 2010. It is the classic Canada vs US. The plucky Canadian indie group vs the Pop/Noise Rock/folkish JUGGERNAUT... Who will win...

you have a ridiculous number of artists in your library. I wonder if I'll ever have that much indie cred :-P

I love that Martyn Fabric mix: my expectations were pretty high, but he may have actually exceeded them. The only shame is that 'Joy Fantastic' leads it off, which I found to be one of the weaker tracks on the Hudson Mohawke record, but he makes up for it by dropping Zomby three or four times. On my mp3 player, I've been playing the shit out of both that and the 69 (AKA Carl Craig) box set from earlier this year.

I was listening to Phil Niblock last night and thought of you - do you know his music? If you don't I think you may like it. His album "Touch Three" is a 3 CD album full of drones and is done in a very engaging and intellectual manner. He is on Touch (as are my adored Rosy Parlane and Oren Ambarchi) so you know the quality is good! :-) What an incredible label - I think they have replaced Kranky as number one in my heart! How was Jandek btw?

XX wise, I just adore how desolate it is, as well as how simplistic the melodies are. It is a perfect album for winter, esp as it has started snowing here - it makes the glacial-like sounds of it feel very much at home.

Have no shame making pilgrimages to locales where important music has been either crafter or inspired by! When in Memphis I spent a large amount of time down by the Wolf River where Jeff Buckley drowned, listening to his track "Nightmares By The Sea" - it was a really special way to show my respect and love for his work and quite cathartic. Likewise Caroline and I driving around the areas where Twin Peaks was filmed, whilst listening to Angelo Badalamenti's corresponding soundtrack.

New Loscil? Which label? Hoping Kranky (as they are my fave label) I could just look at their site that said. Will check out White Rainbow - didn't enjoy their first album too much, but as you've recommended it I'll check this one out. Kranky again? Glad to hear you are enjoying "Jessamine". "Iris" will reward you very much I think over some more time. Have you heard Oren Ambarchi yet? Maybe start with "In The Pendulums Embrace" (on Southern Lord/Touch) - such a special album. Caroline and I saw he and Nels Cline perform together a week before we left Melbourne and they both destroyed - it was the greatest and loudest noise I have witnessed. Plus it was in the National Gallery of Victoria, so was Government funded! Excellent! :-) Yesterday I saw a man buy the new Oren Ambarchi album in Soundscapes and I wanted to hug him! As a Melbournian I was so proud! :-) Have you heard The XX? I am adoring their album, esp the opening and closing tracks (opening track esp).

Excellent!!! All I can say is Rosy Parlane. Makes Fennesz seem like Van Halen. "Iris" is one of the most perfect albums I have heard (and at only 3 20 minute tracks).

PS I just realized all of yr last few hours of listening have been Kranky based. I like you even more now Jud than I did 10 seconds ago! ;-) Kranky is my number one fave label (with the UK label Touch sitting at number two)

Nice work with the Loscil! Such an underrated/appreciated composer. I think Plume is my fave all up. This said, he is no Rosy Parlane (if you don't know him, you MUST check out his album "Iris") - I think he is the best in this scene, with Tim Hecker, Oren Ambarchi and Loscil big faves for me as well. Again, if you don't know Oren Ambarch, check him out - "In The Pendulum's Embrace" is a good starting point.

I know! I am always amazed by the shows Toronto gets. Thinking of Vic Chestnutt as well, but have to be careful $ wise at the moment due to lack of employment.

Tsk tsk, you should know better than to trust Sparty. It looks like the Wolverines are having a pretty good season so far...must be nice to be back in the thick of things after the mediocrity of the Amaker years. Bonus points for beating Duke a few weeks back as well - any day that the Blue Devils lose is a good day as far as I'm concerned.
