I see Billy as being like, idk more straightorward talking about issues of a 16 year old kid with art interest, where Kurt doesn't feel the need to have silly things describe things. Billy is great and more traditional pop for songwriting,...which is odd considering most consider Kurt a pop songwriter, which I guess coomes from his memorable hooks. But I think that Kurt is a lot more about emotion anyway since his lyrics are pretty much just nothing anyway.

I will say that rock musicians beat anyone on depth of shit, gospel, William Butler Yeats or anyone. And that's why rock music is probably my favorite type of art. Now lyrical depth, that's what rock musicians can be fantastic at, but actual lyricism as far as word functions and things, I see them often being second rate.

I completely agree with you, and I think that rock lyrics are often very touching and inspiring and emotional etc, and I love a lot of lyrics in rock music but that doesn't mean I give them a lot of artistic credit necessarily. I mean..name a rock lyricist that uses anything besides metaphor, simile or allusion in their lyrics, what about actual sound devices like alliteration or something? I think that rock lyrics can be touching and if they are that's what makes them good, but as far as artful use of words i don't really know. Maybe I'm reading too deep into it.

There's a ton of artists who have good words, but most rock imagery is a little weak and forced and the metaphors and similes and sound devices are weak as hell tbh. I guess there's a lot of artists that have good ballad writing skills but to me that's not really a great form of poetry as its more based on the message than substance. Tim Buckley comes to mind for that.

A lot of it is just really cliche and trying to be deep or cryptic but really has no poetic devices, which you'll find in a lot of hip hop's tongue twisters. That's why for instance, there's a magazine that labels the Mountain Goats singer (too lazy to look it up) the best non rap lyricist. I guess I'd throw Kurt into that mix actually for a bunch of nonsensical bullshit that's really interesting and can resonate with me without even meaning anything.

I think that people give it too much credit for its songwriting really, I don't think that there's anything special about it for the most part. That is if you're just talking about lyrics, the actual music is often incredible obviously. AS far as lyricists, Van Morrison, Morrisey at times, Nick Drake (I consider contemporary folk as a derivative of rock music), Mikael Akerfeldt, Doug Martsch

Nah I don't think he is, but i'm obviously a big fan of the band. I don't really think many rock musicians are good songwriters, i think that maybe like...idk Van Morrison, Dylan etc are good songwriters but not exceptional. I'm not claiming to be a huge poetry buff or anything but I just don't think rock is notable for its songwriting. Hip hop is though I think.

I don't care about most beefs in general. I did care about the Nas and Jay one though.

I can honestly not care less about it, so I don't have much of an opinion on it. Seems pointless, like most beefs.

Yo if you've got any free time could you answer these questions for a college project i'm doing? (also nice brother ali and neutral milk plays) 1. Does a record label influence your interest in an artist? 2. Is there a particular record label you are most interested in? 3. Will you often look into what record label an artist you like is associated with? 4. Do you think it is important to support an independent label as oppose to a major? 5. apart from electronic and hip hop music what other genre’s influence you? 6. What format of buying music do you prefer? (digital, cd’s, vinyl) 7. What hip hop/ electronic/ trip hop/ ambient artists would you like to hear more artists like?

Old Raves End by Swarms. Probably my 2nd fave Dubstep release, after Burial - Untrue (Which took ages to really sink in.)
