I just made myself sad by reading my own shout ... aww, what an album that woulda been ... and the actual 1981 album to follow STILL would have been awesome.

With time, I must acknowledge that the earlier live chorus blows the studio chorus out of the water. But then, in the live versions we don't get "put your hand on my head, baby! Do I have a temperature?!" Tough trade-off. Gotta give the live the edge, though. If only if only if only there'd been a record put down in December 1980, a stopgap between Saved and the overflow of material condensed into Shot of Love. Just think: Caribbean Wind, The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar, Every Grain of Sand, Ain't Gonna Go to Hell for Anybody, Cover Down Pray Through, I Will Love Him, City of Gold, maybe You Changed My Life and/or some altogether unheard, crack-fallen & unreleased gems, all on one album. Coulda given Saved a run for its money as my favorite Dylan song collection (as opposed to fave album, which goes to its predecessor).

The studio version is fantastic, but I might prefer the chorus from the earlier live versions: "Set my affection on things above, let nothing get in the way of that love, not even the Rock of Gibraltar! If you see her on Fanning Street, tell her I still think she's neat, and that the groom's still waiting at the altar." Just a great rhythm and sequence of thoughts; but I do like the bigger picture in the studio chorus too, where the groom reference is more explicitly about Christ and not just borrowing the imagery for a matter of more personal proportions (which, however, works extremely well).
