i'm alright ta, yourself? just started a new job in town this week so i've mostly been preoccupied with that. i may well have been on that bus you saw, ha. can't wait for atp, i haven't actually been to any of them before so it should be top. the matt groening line-up does look smart though, liars, boredoms and james chance should all be immense. how's tricks anyway?

hello. sorry i'm a bit late in getting back to you. what did you make of Health then? have to say i was a bit disappointed. i was expecting a bit longer than 25 minutes but the whole thing felt a bit half-arsed to me. wasn't as loud as i'd hoped for either. the drummer is a dude though, i was impressed by his mullet/beard combo

I just moved here, like a week ago. I think I saw you at Fuck Buttons + you were wearing the same HEALTH shirt as me! It was a good gig considering I was billy no mates. I remember seeing them back in the day in Bristol and they played for 5 minutes and then everything cut out. Website is cool, nice designs, mad propz.

and i'm not entirely sure whether that Fuck Buttons gig will sell out or not to be honest. i suspect not but i couldn't say with any degree of certainty. i ordered my ticket ages ago and it still hasn't arrived, though. i can't say i've been to Subspace or even heard of it, what's it like? to be honest i'm well off the pace of what goes on in town, seeing as i live so far out in the sticks. that shopping park sounds thrilling, but i'm sure it couldn't top some of the local shopping precincts around these parts - there's one in particular just down the road that's a little bit like something out of 28 Days Later if you know what i mean. it's totally lifeless but there's an almost eerie atmosphere to the place.

now you ask i can't really think how to describe Grouper. sort folky ambient noise i suppose. really good though. you should listen to her Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill album, that's probably my favourite of hers. i had an ok weekend thanks, it was my mum's 50th birthday do so i spent most of last night surrounded by middle-aged drunkards. that isn't without it's charms though, i suppose. should be having a couple of old uni mates down next weekend so that should be a bit more lively. glad to hear The Answering Machine were good. as i say, they seem to play in Manchester often enough so i'll have to check them out at some point. and haha, Oasis fans can be a surprisingly sensitive bunch sometimes. i don't really dislike them, but i don't really see why they inspire such devotion among so many people. though apparently Liam is going to carry on with the band, which could end up being pretty lolworthy.

oh, and i'm not remotely fussed about Oasis splitting up to be honest. i did like Definitely Maybe when i was 8 or 9, but they've not done anything for me in a long time, which is more than i can say for a number of my friends. i was asked whether i wanted to go and see them in Heaton Park but listening to Oasis surrounded by piss-chucking yobs isn't really my idea of a good time. by the way, i don't have Facebook or any gigs lined up before Fuck Buttons (which i see you're also going to) but if you do end up at that one feel free to keep an eye out for me, i'll be the short, speccy lad propping up the bar. that ought to narrow it down :-p

the nexus sounds intriguing. not that long until i have the excuse to go there since that Grouper gig is coming up. can't wait for that one. my trip to the lake district was good fun thanks, though i don't remember large sections of it. i do recall ending up in some seriously dodgy club listening to some dodgy trance stuff though. the hangover on Sunday was horrendous but it was a good laugh and nice to have a change of scene. how was that party of yours? and were The Answering Machine any good? they're always playing in town but i'm yet to see them. i quite liked that Lightbulbs song though. and yes, my efforts to interview Rolo Tomassi were a bit messy. it was the first (and so far last) time i've interviewed a band, so i went around town for some Dutch courage beforehand and overdid it a little. listening to the recording the day after was possibly the most embarrassing thing i've ever done.

and yeah, i actually used to be half-decent at French when i was at school. i was good at listening and comprehension, anyway, but i could never speak it without feeling like a bit of a pillock. i still remember most of the swear words though, naturally. i actually do have plans for this bank holiday weekend, i'm heading up to the Lake District to see an old uni mate which should be nice. i haven't seen him for a little while and i really like it up there. have you anything lined up besides brushing up on your French?

yeah, Piccadilly Records is ace though i haven't been there for too long. it's a shame Fat City's closed down across the road as well, i've spent hours on end scuttling between those two. i wasn't aware of that new venue on Oxford Road but i'm all for more variety. I haven't been to Nexus Art Cafe yet either but I'm seeing Grouper and Jasper TX there in November which i'm particularly looking forward to. to be honest i tend to go to most gigs by myself - most of my mates are into Kasabian, Oasis and the like, so dragging them along to the gigs i go to would be a bit pointless! i love 'em but sometimes i despair of their taste in music. i do occasionally write reviews but to be truthful i haven't done anything for a couple of months. i used to write quite often when i was at uni and in london, but i've got a bit lethargic recently. i also interviewed Rolo Tomassi once but that was one of the most embarrassing experiences of my life! never again.

oh, and as for my favourite place in Manchester, that's actually quite a tough one come to think of it. as far as venues go i really like the Deaf Institute, but then i'm also pretty fond of old man pubs like the Lass O'Gowrie. there's always some interesting characters in The Salisbury, too. have you taken a shine to anywhere in particular whilst you've been here? and i'd hang onto that mac if i were you, autumn's just around the corner... :-P

ah, i didn't know Kraftwerk were playing Bestival. did you see them at the Velodrome a month or so back, by any chance? that looked really cool from the highlights i saw on TV. the Velodrome's a bit of a trek for me though so i didn't go myself. 65dos are playing at the Academy fairly soon i believe, i might drag myself along to that one. and i don't actually work in anything remotely journalism-related - i'm an audio typist and i sit around typing up police interviews all day, haha. it's a bit of an eye-opener but monotonous. most of my colleagues are middle-aged mums, so whilst i get mothered quite a bit they're not really the type to go gigging, which is unfortunate. i did have pipe dreams of being a music journalist and i've done bits and bobs for various zines and sites, but it's such a tough game to get into. i'm sure you'll settle in fine if you give it a little longer, like you say it's only been a couple of months. you're in a great spot for meeting people too.

MBV were amazing last year, You Made Me Realise was ridiculous. it must have gone on for half an hour or so, i remember feeling really disorientated afterwards, it was ace. i really want to do one of the ATPs at Minehead but that's another thing i'm yet to get round to. who are you hoping to see at Bestival? i haven't looked at the line-up. i studied journalism with English and just about managed to scrape a 2:2. Chester was great fun though and i was concentrating more on enjoying myself than studying most of the time. i worked in Ealing after that. i quite liked the area but it was a little far from where all the gigs were, trekking across London for them was a bit of an effort. my workmates weren't the most sociable bunch either. and yeah, i know the very building you mention, the Trafford Centre is only ten minutes or so from here. how are you finding your job? i'm hoping to find a different job to my current one soon enough, but i'm a bit of a lazy sod, truth be told.
