Country Used to be Good: My roots and soul music
I remember telling people how I like pretty much any kind of music, but not country. Then, started realizing that some of the songs I liked a lot were considered 'country and western music'. I loved listening to my 45 of Johnny Horton's 'Battle of New Orleans', with the B-Side, 'North To Alaska'. I laughed and laughed whenever I heard Johnny Cash singing 'A Boy Named Sue', and later on, I developed a deep love for the music of Johnny Cash. My dad played Willie Nelson records, and I loved 'On The Road Again'. I remember when my dad would make sure I remembered that Willie was one of President Reagan's favorites, and that Willie was at the White House frequently. At the time, I was completely unaware that Willie was, in addition to him being an outlaw country star, a pot-smoking hippie-type. I wonder if ol'Just Say No' Ronnie and Nancy knew that, back then. Anyway, memories are my own, but this music brings me home. It seems my whole family was raised in the south, even though I wasn't.…

My Love Is Not Returned
this is a playlist of tunes where the subject is an unrequited love -- love given and not returned... the playlist was inspired by one of my all-time favorite songs, 'walk away renee', by the left banke, and my own experiences of love unreturned.

Control
this is a playlist dedicated to ian curtis and the rest of the gang from joy division. since these playlists require tracks from 15 different bands, i also included music from the time period that joy divison captured, as well as before that time period i imagine that these artists and songs could have been what influenced their sound. it's just my own speculation, though, and it is not based on much factual evidence. i do know that ian liked bowie, and i figure he probably liked iggy & the stooges, also. i don't know if he was into lou reed and the v.u., but it's possible. i also think he sounds a lot like jim morrison. so i might include some doors.

Return to Charlottesville
it's been said to me numerous times, 'you never really leave charlottesville. people have left; but they always come back.' this mix doesn't really have anything to do specifically with charlottesville, other than maybe a few bands who were local to this area at one time. this mix is about the music i listened to after i returned to charlottesville, following my year in hollywood, at the musician's institute. this was when the dave matthews band was getting started. this was when grunge and the settle scene were becoming familiar words and phrases. this was after i had developed a greater appreciation for instrumental music, jazz, world folk, fusion, progressive, outside, experimental, punk... long before the word indie meant anything other than a label that was independently owned. indie had nothing to do with a particular sound. this record was independently released: is it indie? so, hope you enjoy 'my return to charlottesville'
