don't go with a fender if you don't know it's right for you. try as many different basses of different brands as possible, and then make choice, based on your experiences. oh, and make sure that you can get stuff you need for it, that if something needs replacement, it's not rare parts, or get an oddly shaped bass that you will have to wait 6 months to get a gigbag, like me. i still haven't gotten the gigbag for my blackbird, and i ordered the bag back in October....

there are a lot of people who know more about basses than i do, but you should think about what kind of sound you want, and what features is important to you. if your playing is as varied as your taste in music there seem to be a general consensus that fender (or their "cheap-brand" counterpart) are always good all-rounders, but if you play more of one genre, you might want to look at other options, as original fenders can be expensive. you should try to ask at your local music shop if you can try to play a few, and ask them for recommendations. or you can try to ask at the talkbass.com forums... or in the gear threads on the last.fm "bass players" group.

What bass do you have now? any plans for what you want to get when you feel you can justify the costs? i have a epiphone blackbird, and love the sound (most suitable for metal,) and the slim neck and perfect bridge height... but what is a DP?
