awesome! the labyrinth festival always held a special appeal. someday, i'll make the voyage to japan. my brother spent two weeks there over the summer and enjoyed himself quite a bit. if you have any particular points of interest to recommend, i would be interested to hear them. and music like this is my favorite, haha!

labyrinth has kind of taken a reputational hit in recent years with the boggle-eyed behaviour of the owner. rural festival is imo the best outdoor festival in japan now in terms of line-up/programming, crowd and vibe, catering and accommodation, nature setting, etc.! but you really can't go wrong with any of those events: they're all world-class, set in a maximally lysergic place!

check out the label peers on workshop recs, e.g. lowtec, move d, even tuell, ozel ab. also recommend producers like madteo and joey anderson from the new york axis of producers. some other more tangential stuff i like on a similar tip ... the royal crown of sweden/loidis monikers of huerco s, any old dettinger records on kompakt ... dj trystero and anything put out on his boutique label, city-2 st. giga, e.g. ultrafog, sacred grove, caveman lsd. and finally check out the john roberts stuff, albums and eps, on dial/laid records. top-tier deep house with similarly leftfield sampling.

hmm, that's a good question. i haven't actually revisited his music since i was a teenager – back when i was hoovering up anything even tangentially related to 'IDM' (or 'electronica': does anyone even use that anymore?) i remember liking the albums on alphabasic and 'red extensions', 'kirlian selections', etc. i'm not sure it has aged all that well – but in the same way that lots of that instrumental, glitchy, post-rock-inflected music hasn't aged well. one era's emotive force is the next era's melodrama or sentimentality, i suppose. cav. empt: he's a great producer and an all-round pretty good guy in the scene, so this just reflects my changing tastes, more than anything!

weathering the bleak mid-winter here. that's cool, there are so many great japanese artists. any notable discoveries? i thought the new dozzy lp was pretty enjoyable. did you give it a spin yet? i've been listening to minimal ambient/drone and 90s-00s atmospheric dnb lately. so many marvelous tracks on good looking records (the label)..

thanks! w/r/t plaid, it really depends from which direction you're approaching them – some people come in for the classic, early sheffield-warp sound, others for the anime soundtrack OST stuff. personally i lean heavily towards the early stuff. 'not for threes' -> 'double figure' -> 'restproof clockwork'. in that same vein, i would recommend the two early black dog albums, 'bytes' and 'spanners'. they have huge amounts of plaid in their DNA. seminal! (q.v. b12's 'electro-soma').

i see that deep, trippy, ambient techno as all deriving from 2010s labels like prologue and semantica. the stand-out masterpiece in that niche is the self-titled 'voices from the lake' LP (donato dozzy & neel) – one of the best techno albums of any era, in my canon. but also check out dozzy/nuel's 'aquaplano' sessions, mike parker's 'lustrations', and dino sabatini's 'shaman's paths'. the dozzy solo stuff, like his LP on further records, is also great. more recently, releases by the likes of formant value, polar inertia, and ligovskoï all hit that exact spot for long-form, atmospheric techno that's heavy on pads/texture and eases back on the bpm (which is frankly at silly nosebleed tempos in the 2020s). special mention to producers like abdullah rashim, acronym, and evigt morker for a darker, more psychedelic take. the former a.r. stuff started out clearly as an imitation of 'that' prologue sound, before pivoting to his northern electronics label (where you'll find the other two!)

Indeed blast from the past. Just like you, never got snapchat, used TikTok once. I really only use Facebook. Back in my teens I used MySpace - good times. Now it's basically dead, although I still do have profile there. :] Now last.fm don't even have forums like it used to many years ago. And xfire, we had a nice community there, until they closed "Random Social Encounters". I was also on VampireFreaks.com - now they only sell goth clothing. People don't talk anymore, they just comment pictures or short videos. I guess we are old. :D Anyways, I'm doing good, married, 2 kids and life is generally good. Last year I and my husband got covid too, while I was basically fine, he was suffering for like 2 days. Men... :D How's life with you?

Glad to see that you've listened to Artefakt. "Kinship" is a quite good album, but their earlier releases are also worth checking -- e.g. "Mirage" from "The Mental Universe" in particular.

I'm listening to the new fp-oner and really enjoying it, but this morning I realized I'd already grabbed a Fred P album from last year titled Modern Architect, which goes in a different aesthetic direction but sounded superb. Anyway, I really liked the Isorinne album I found on spotify, Samarbeten. Do you have any other specific albums to recommend? I'm about to just randomly skip around what Northern Electronics offers on bandcamp.

just to confuse things, it turns out you can reply here now as well... as well as the fp oner albums, i really rate all of the LPs that lawrence has done for mule musiq. that whole label just has the most gorgeous, velveteen sound. re: northern electronics: all the abdullah rashim and acronym stuff is very sleek and sexy techno; varg under all his various monikers is great at ambient. isorinne releases in a group called 'D.Å.R.F.D.H.S' that are very very good.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll be checking out Isorinne this week first. As for Fred P, I love his work so i'll be grabbing that newere fp-oner album - I see you and I left half the shouts on his artist page so far! I agree about that expansive feeling of his work. Even the Black Jazz Consortium album I've been into lately has that feel, but it's not nearly as warm as the fp-oner stuff I've heard.
