The way in which the trumpet is used in this song positively screams "early 70's" and makes this song seem very dated -- which is a pity. The appeal of this song is in the very simple and straightforward lyrics, which I think does a far better job than most love songs do of capturing the essence of what goes through the mind of your average man when he falls in love..."I'm in love with you, do you feel the same way about me? I hope so, because I feel lucky to have you in my life. If you don't feel the same way, I'll be very unhappy." It really doesn't need to be more florid than that, does it?

Dear ChingBling...yes, there is at least one other song I know of in which Herb Alpert has performed as a singer as well as a trumpet player. The song is called "Pillow" and appears on the "Keep Your Eyes On Me" album -- the song is a duet, and he sings it with his wife Lani Hall.

Alpert sang this to his first wife in a 1968 TV special called The Beat of the Brass. The sequence was taped on the beach in Malibu. The song was not intended to be released, but after it was used in the TV special, thousands of telephone calls to CBS asking about it convinced label owner Alpert to release it as a single two days after the show aired. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1811 (ED. Note: Yes he did do other songs under the pseudonym of Dore Alpert,,,)
