Biography

From the rust and ruins along the Lake Erie shore, Cleveland, Ohio’s DEADIRON have emerged to lay siege to the music scene. This Cleveland quintet, made up of Alex Van Ness (lead vocals), Sunny Kolattukudy (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Tyler Harvey (lead guitar and backing vocals), J. Bennett (bass and backing vocals), and Thomas Walling (drums) combine their eclectic musical influences to form a band rooted in street-level reality. The end result is a sound equally as crushing as it is classic, each note an homage to their influences and a step toward the future. This melodic thunder, orchestrated in honor of their home city of Cleveland, has separated itself from other formulaic bands on trails already blazed. DEADIRON has set forth to carve its own path, and masses of Cleveland metal fans are following in tow.
DEADIRON has been fresh on the scene but years in the making, fronted by co-founding member Alex Van Ness. “I’ve been in a lot of local bands, but I’ve never been so proud to be a part of something in my life as this band,” says Van Ness. No stranger to the stage, Van Ness is known for his involvement in Cleveland death metal act Neonatal Death and Oi! punk forerunners, The Brazen Rogues. In spite of such involvements, few of these projects granted Alex the chance to fully portray the feel of his adored city, Cleveland. “I love this city,” he says, “I’m still an old-school Coventry kid at heart and I’ve always dreamed of the music scene bringing people together to do the right thing and have a lot of fun doing it! And now it's time.”
Van Ness’ influences in metal and hardcore music are shared with co-founder Sunny Kolattukudy, a Columbus native with musical roots spanning from Scandinavian melodic death metal icons At the Gates to American thrash kings Metallica and East Coast hardcore legends Blood for Blood. Though he relocated to Cleveland to study medicine, Kolattukudy stumbled upon Van Ness and their shared passion for heavy music was quickly evident. He states that neither knew just how important the band soon to be known as “DEADIRON”, but that the drive to start a melodic metal band charged with the energy of punk and laced with the reality-fueled lyrics of hardcore was irresistible and unique. In spite of their determination, Van Ness and Kolattukudy were but two pieces of the puzzle; a vocalist and a rhythm guitarist could not push the Deadiron machine alone.
After a drawn-out and arduous auditioning process, Van Ness and Kolattukudy found Tyler Harvey, a student of Berklee College and music graduate of Case Western University. This level of training, coupled with intricate picking and aggressive harmony similar to influences such as Iced Earth and In Flames, complemented Kolattukudy’s arrangements, which were intended for dual guitars from the outset. “Tyler really took us to a whole new level,” says Kolattukudy, citing Harvey’s “tasteful harmonies and shredding leads” as an ideal balance to his own aggressive riffs.
This balance of sonic harmony and hostility is set to the dynamic and technical drum work of Lakewood native Thomas Walling. Walling entered the band not only with experience in local Cleveland acts Degameth and Mo Rage, but a sweeping range of musical influences. From The Black Dahlia Murder to Hiromi Uehara to Eminem to Messhuggah, Walling shifts his style from thunderous precision to aggressive to complex at a moment’s notice.
The final piece of the DEADIRON puzzle came in the form of J. Bennett, who joined with Walling to make a rock solid rhythm section. Influenced by Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, and King Diamond, Bennett joined the group mere weeks after first hearing them. With a playstyle inspired by Cliff Burton of Metallica and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Bennett was a natural fit in the band, and brought a vigor and precision to the low end.
These five musicians, passionate and determined in their craft, have already begun their campaign: to conquer every stage, to churn every pit, and uplift all who will hear their song.
