Yes, man! Kolkata is apparently the cheapest amongst the metro cities. (: The names of the places you mentioned there: Dakshineshwar Kali Temple is like really, really close to my house, y'know. (; Takes not more than 10 mins by car. A walking distance for me even. :P As for ashrams, I'm not really sure if there're any in Kolkata; but there sure are lots of them in the country otherwise. Eg. the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujrat. October would be the best time to visit Kolkata for tourists 'cause we celebrate Durga Puja around that time. It's like the biggest festival for us bengalis! But, since you'll be here in Dec, it's a good time too. Especially, weather-wise. Hope you'll have an awesome time here! (:

Well, I think Calcutta is probably one of the cheapest metropolitan cities in India. From my experience of travelling to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, etc., I'd say Calcutta is the cheapest (also that fact that I'm from Calcutta myself). :P Calcutta has some awesome places of historical significance to visit. Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, jtnf. And I presume you'd know that Calcutta was originally the capital of India until 1911; due to some disputes the British had to later shift the capital to New Delhi. So... yes, I'd suggest you add Calcutta. You won't regret, I promise! And there are lots of cheap(but standard) hotels here. Search the internet, you'll find one. (:

We have a very rich tradition in rock here, I think you'll find interesting musicians as [artist]León Gieco[/artist] (being called over here "the Bob Dylan of the Pampas" -a "pampa" is a prairie, it's called that way because of a native ethnia), [artist]Almendra[/artist] (one of the first rock bands to sing in Spanish), [artist]Sui Generis[/artist] (seminal act of our hero [artist]Charly García[/artist]) or, in a more hard vein, [artist]Pescado Rabioso[/artist] (formed by ex-Almendra [artist]Luis Alberto Spinetta[/artist]) and [artist]Pappo's Blues[/artist]. Pappo is somewhat of a mythological character over here; he reached to tour in the USA with B.B. King during the 90's, but he died in a car accident in 2005, just before his last album was released in the States.

Cumbia and reggaeton? You are missing nothing, it's kinda shitty stuff, but if you want to see what I am talking about, you have [artist]Damas Gratis[/artist], [artist]Nestor en Bloque[/artist], or the last trend over here, [artist]Los Wachiturros[/artist]... Colombian cumbia, on the other hand, may worth -it's a folkloric rythm from there, but the cumbia which is listened here in Argentina is pretty much an insult to that. I don't know a lot of musicians from Colombia, since I only got to listen single songs from this original style of cumbia, but some of this groups are [artist]Los Corraleros de Majagual[/artist], [artist]Wilson Choperena[/artist] and [artist]Luis E. Martinez[/artist]
