yeah, it probably never will be possible to create complex music from scratch in real-time; i'm just saying that i'd like to see the boundaries between real-time and non-real-time in electronic music blurred more; i think it's an area that needs more exploration because despite all the advanced daws and programming languages, etc, for music, i still think there's a lot of room for improvement among the interfaces. and the interfaces are of course a massive influence on the sound. but if you mean that non-real-time composition is important and shouldn't be done away with, i definitely don't disagree. as much as i love improvisation, i have to admit it's impossible to ever improvise the complexity you can achieve with the non-real-time methods of composition. i guess i just feel like it's a lot cooler & more interesting to see an electronic musician "perform" rather than just "press play" on one of their studio tracks for a "live performance".

related: have you heard of live coding? it's a sort of movement within electronic music recently about re-programming the tools on-the-fly... an example of one of the new interfaces i'm interested in is a program called betablocker, which is basically a multi-threaded acid techno-generating cpu. there are a few interesting videos of it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-G8qDTYuhOM // http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpclpEm774U -- those are both benig reprogrammed in real time. in the first one you can even see that the sequence modifies itself. that sort of thing is really interesting to me; that's the future of electronic music imo: erasing the line between real-time performance and pre-recorded/composed sequences.

hmm. yeah, that's very true, electronic music (and especially experimental stuff like glitch) has definitely put a sort of separation between liveness & composition. when i listen to glitch i often find myself wondering exactly how "live" it was, because some of it sounds like it could be improvised but i'm never fully sure. personally i've always been interested in the music that blurs that line; i think for electronic music to progress there needs to be less of a distinction between performance and preparation. too bad it's so difficult; there are so many parameters to control that you unfortunately have to give up something if you want to actually "play music" rather than just "press play". one of my big interests as an electronic musician myself is in the interfaces themselves, and finding new ways to allow real-time access to parameters without having to "hide" some, or give up control.

thanks, glad you thought so :) i guess it shouldn't have surprised me considering that he is a glitch artist, but i was just really impressed that the music is actually made of real glitches. sometimes i wonder if artists are really doing what they say they're doing or if they just pretend. i'm glad ryoji ikeda was being real though, it just cements my respect for him as a musician & artist.

Мне вот тут пришла в голову идея разведки. Такое дело действительно можно провернуть в одиночку и оценить, стоит ли овчинка выделки.
