Orippua's debut album "Am I Free" presents a question "am I 100% free?". The question is directed to themselves as artists who create music, and to themselves as beings.
The 9 songs have individual styles and character, breaking through the dense walls that categorize modern pop music with countless names. Even within each song the chords and rhythm freely take on varying forms. The songs feature irregular time signatures that complement unique character of Korean language, as well as sequential modulation that you would encounter in classical music.
One important aspect of their music is the lyrics that encourage us to reflect on our inner selves, rather than focusing on the outer issues such as relationship between people or criticism on society. The music created on those lyrics is cheerful, sad, amusing, depressing, sometimes destructive, and beautiful.
They take on every step of the creative process for however long it takes, including composition, lyrics, arrangements, performance, and mixing, as they wish to express their philosophy clearly and consistently, free of any external influence.
===================== TRACK REVIEW ================
01_Pandemic
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong, King daD.A.
Composed by King daD.A.
Arranged by King daD.A.
A man contracts an infectious disease and crosses boundaries between life, death, and dreams. Through the experience he discovers the true self as an eternal being in isolation and pain.
The first, the second and the 3rd verses are in the style reminicent of progressive rock. The impressive chorus follows, featuring brilliant backing vocals and irregular time signatures. The 4th verse boldly changes into the world music style with percussions and a piano, replacing drums and synthesizers.
02_Bad Guys
Lyrics, composed and arranged by King daD.A.
They face the reality called "society" in their 20s, a reality that is completely different from what they dreamed of as innocent teens. The youths who chose honorable self destruction over being tamed: Are they useless ones after all?
The verse depicting self-loathing in an unconventional blues style, followed by the screaming chorus singing "honorably" in a rock ballard style, will lead to the implosion.
03_Eggs Don`t Dream About Hatching Out
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong
Composed by King daD.A., Gkong Gkong
Arranged by King daD.A.
An egg is being carried by a truck on a summer day. In its thin shell, despairing at the future already determined regardless of its will, the egg decides to jump to the pavement.
An egg's suicide?
In constrast to the heavy subject, a backing chorus with a cheerful rhythm and a jazzy progression of chords will present unconventional tension and release.
This song has won a number of awards at song contests overseas.
04_Silence Far Beyond
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong
Composed by Gkong Gkong, King daD.A.
Arranged by King daD.A.
In the modern society where Internet and social networks are ever more popular, communication has taken on a unique form we've never seen before.
Who am I, if I always have to play different characters for different relationships?
A gloomy orchestral string sound accompanies strong heavy metal riffs, hinting at fear and anxiety. As the song rushes to the end, the emotions flare up into a performance of a chaos, disintegration, and destruction.
05_Hunting Mosquito
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong
Composed by King daD.A., Gkong Gkong
Arranged by King daD.A.
A mosquito versus a human: a comical war over a drop of blood on a summer night.
The 4/4 + 1/16 irregular time in the instrumental part makes use of the rhythm to visualize the creaking and limping game of hide-and-seek between a bold mosquito hunter and a persistent mosquito that will not give up.
The reversal at the end goes against all expectations in both the lyrics and the music, turning a plain skit into whimsical imaginations.
06_Corridor
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong, King daD.A.
Composed and arranged by King daD.A.
As he faces people after people day after day, every moment feels dangerous.
He would lose track of all rhythms to ruin himself if he loosened the control over himself only by a little bit. That autosuggestion makes it difficult for him to breathe.
The song features dramatic aspects such as the musical development in a décalcomanie-like structure that reminds us of watching a short horror film, as well as the arrangement that freely moves between Rock, musical, jazz, and electronica.
07_Evaporated
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong
Composed by Gkong Gkong, King daD.A.
Arranged by King daD.A.
Everyday he obeys the oppressing rules of the society, painfully avoiding the voice from the deep inside that says there may be a better way – with doubts about himself for readily accepting the reality, and with the pity for persuading himself to accept it.
The dry and calm verse suggests a feeling of resignation, which provides a sharp contrast to the piercing and screaming chorus.
The sound of the Vox Continental organ adds a psychedelic effect, and the Baritone Bass in the 2nd verse provides a novel experience.
8_9:40 AM
Lyrics, composed and arranged by King daD.A.
9:40 in the morning is the best time for a jobless to get on a bus, after most people have already gone to school or to work.
This song is unique in that its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd verses are arranged in completely different styles as in a variation, even though the verses have almost identical progression and melodies.
Can you notice the 3rd verse is modulated up by a semitone, following the instrumental that plays like an endless ocean in one's inner side?
09_A Slight Fever
Lyrics by Gkong Gkong
Composed and arranged by King daD.A.
The early-winter cold air envelops me to clear up my mind. As I come inside the room, tiny dew drops on the window twinkle like a budding hope. I welcome the warmth on my cheeks.
The cheerful ska-style verse is connected to the chorus that visually unfolds like a musical production, in a way that reminds us of transitions between acts in a stage play.
The ending that shouts "freely" provides a partial answer to the question in the album title "Am I free?"
