Listening to Mardraum for the first thing 15 years give or take and I'm wondering why it didn't sink I'm back then. This isn't Viking Metal, this isn't Prog Metal, this is pure Black Metal but with Enslaved at the top of their game like so many of their fantastic prog albums, but just pure, but huge as it's dynamic, complex and just so damn good.

This fanbase has What Else is There as #1 track, how sad. (Nothing against Röyksopp, everything against cringy metal covers.)

After how painfully mediocre E and Utgard were, I just can't bring myself to listen to Heimdal. I need to, but damn, I never expected safe and formulaic from Enslaved... It hurts.

E is nowhere near the word progressive other than non conventional time signatures in songs. It is the first uninspired album that Enslaved had made. Still haven't brought myself to listen to Heimdal, yet i will before the end of the year. Heard a song from it that actually sounded a lot more inspired that anything on E and Utgard, but i could've just enjoyed it cause I was with friends on a lake chillin.

I liked E very much, but didn’t like the generic version the came after, like, AT ALL. And now I’m finally forcing myself to sit down and listen to Heimdal, the cover doesn’t help. Let’s see how it goes.

A few people who didn't like E or Utgard ended up enjoying Heimdal, so there's that. Imo, all three albums may not be reinventing Enslaved's musical wheelhouse or reach the heights of past releases, but they all still sound and feel distinctive from each other. I think Heimdal has more of an aggressive bite to it. It's worth a listen or two.

I don't mind albums that don't reinvent the wheel, all as long as they still have passion behind it. E was the first album that really just felt like it was phoned in and not inspired. Utgard was even worse in a sense as not only was it safe, it really felt a lot more formulaic than than E. I'm going to have to bring myself to listen to it soon. It sucks that I've even felt this way about an Enslaved album to begin with. They're one of my favorite bands for god's sake. I've feared that Enslaved may have gotten the opposite problem of Opeth. Not changing, but just becoming incredibly dull. Opeth simply discarded not only the death metal, but also the purposeful and intent driven songwriting, that even Watershed had that everything past Heritage has. The exception being In Cauda Venenum. That was the first album that didn't feel like a Opeth just being a crappy 70's prog rock clone and missing absolutely all of the charm of the 70's bands. It actually felt like Opeth again.

Hopefuly Heimdal will be that "return." to being just a great and listenable band. I feel really weird about having to hype myself for Enslaved. Fucking rough.

Heimdal is leagues better in quality than E and Utgard. Its fun and I love that it gets even more proggy and technical, yet adds even some Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. It's a very good album.

I think Heimdal is probably their best since RIITIIR, as good as the albums in between also are

After E and Utgard, this is the first time I'm not really excited for An Enslaved album. I seriously hope it's better than the last 2 albums and not just derivative.

I'd forgotten how great their last few records are, such well written albums! Plenty of variety.

Early Enslaved is good. The modern, not so much. Can't stand the clean vocals; they ruin otherwise good songs.

Herbrand Larsen was great singer, his voice so soothing. The new chap is useless; and both E and Utgard are the worst the of the band's career, unfortunately. Perhaps they existed for far too long and created too many great song -- no streak can go on endlessly.

Its from an Immortal track called Enslaved in frost. No racial tone whatsoever. So I think they're good.

only Sleeper's Dreamside Magic and Necromantic Black Arts are real. what Innos magic can offer? generic fireballs and golden showers? Beliar Magic even looks way more impressive, especially Cry of the Dead - the ultimate one, the true Deathspell. Innos Wept!

“Havenless” blew up after its use in Sam Nunn’s _Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey_ and has remained one of their most popular songs ever since, though it seems their cover of “What Else Is There” has eclipsed it recently. I’m somewhat surprised “Return to Yggdrasill” never blew up as much: it was also in Nunn’s film, but I guess it doesn’t have a hook as big as that chant. There are too many killer Enslaved tracks for me to rank my top 50, but I think all four odd-numbered tracks on Below the Lights would make my list, as would “Return to Yggdrasill”. The only thing I’m 100% sure of is that “Større enn tid - tyngre enn natt” is #1, though. #2 might be “793” or “Forsaken” or “As Fire Swept Clean the Earth”. Maybe. Ask me tomorrow and I’ll probably have a different list for everything but #1.
