Organiser Panic Productions decided in 1995 that it was time. Time to organize an open air reggae- & worldmusic festival with a low entrance price so that everybody was able to pay us a visit.
Why..?? For the simple reason that there was no outdoor festival in the Netherlands that programmed mainly reggae music. Which is strange because reggae is thé music to be enjoyed in the open air, always creating a sunny and very relaxed atmosphere.
Now after 11 years the festival has definately proven it’s right to excist. During these years the number of visitors grew to an amazing 33.000 at the 2006 edition.
The visitors can enjoy all kind of entertainment at the venue such as workshops, art, live performers and of course the free childrens-entertainment corner. Should you get hungry, no worries because there are exotic foodstands from all over the globe, to let you not only hear, but also taste those Caribbean vibes. The venue is completely decorated in style to guarantee the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the REGGAE SUNDANCE festival.
Talking about that atmosphere we must not forget that the Sundance festival is only made possible because of a great number of volunteers, who help create that Irie atmosphere and are also an important factor to the fact that the ticket- and consumption-price are still at a very reasonable level.
The original choice for the 3rd weekend of August was not only because of the beautiful weather that we have enjoyed through most of the editions. August 17th is also the birthday of Marcus Garvey, one of the great prophets who was very inspirational to the Rastafari movement and many legendary reggae-artists such as Bob Marley and Burning Spear.
Unfortunately because of the change of date of the huge Lowlands festival to ‘our’ weekend we had to move our date to the 2nd weekend of August. This however has other advantages like the collaboration that has started in 2005 with the Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden.
The festivalcampsite, which has grown to take a special place during the weekend, will certainly be present in the coming editions. Hopefully the new venue provides us with enough space so everybody can stay there and enjoy the sounds of various international soundsystems and of course a special live-performance on the Friday-evening in the big tent.
So nuff reason to pay a visit at the next Reggae Sundance Festival!
