Ja, the northward route is by far the most popular. According to the latest stats, only 29 percent of "thru-hikers" actually complete the entire journey. Have you ever read "A Walk In The Woods" by Bill Bryson? I laughed at the part where he explained that his hiking partner had a pack brimming with twinkies and cupcakes :-)

I always thought I would start in Maine, so it's not a race against the clock to get to Baxter Peak before it closes. Plus I'm a bit of a non-conformist :-)

Nice, never hiked in that area, but since I was a kid I have wanted to thru-hike the Appalachian trail. The problem is getting 5 months off from work...

Awesome. Where are some of your favorite places to go? I am really fond of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. I can't get enough of the Rockies.
