Check out this review: http://www.tcj.com/reviews/habitat-2/ the comic looks really interesting, but sadly, shipping to europe is too expensive for me. I think I'm gonna mail the creator to ask if she has an electronic version I can buy off her. Watchmen is good, classic stuff. I haven't been reading a lot of comics lately, but a lot of SF and popular science books (which is also related to this Autechre and futuristic music binge I'm on....) Are you interested in animation? I've found a lot of nice stuff on a message board some time ago, check out this for instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2z2Wu1D2f4 and this is absolutely beautiful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1EbNvHDxbA

Hey! It seems both of us are late-repliers.. Good to hear from you, I hope your exam went well. I definitely know where you're coming from regarding choosing work instead of studies - I got stuck on my master's thesis and never finished it, dragging it on for years - makes me sick even when I think about how much time I lost. But anyway, all's well, I studied philosophy but now I work in IT.. Starting some new projects with the job soon, but all I think about all day are artistic projects that I never start because I'm a lazy coward of some sorts. My favourite grindcore/powerviolence/hardcore band is by far EXTORTION. Check the albums "SICK" and "LOOSE SCREWS" out, I think they're excellent. Another favorite is DISCORDANCE AXIS - "the inalienable dreamless" - it's very surreal and strange heavy music. I also like IRON LUNG "sexless/no sex", but they're more on the hardcore side, and the classic NO COMMENT "downsided". Also, check out Agoraphobic Nosebleed for more experimental stuff.

I've not been reading anything new, but I ordered some of Joe Sacco's work, which is always good. I definitely recommend taking art classes, it is a lot of fun -- I'm really having a blast. Drawing models is great - every saturday I do a class at which we draw a model.. nude, non-nude - every week a different one. It is great, I'm learning a lot. Im writing to you from work, when I get home I'll send you some other recommendations for grindcore..

Hey there! Sorry for the late reply...! Thanks for your message and recommendations. I actually own all of Lightning Bolt's albums on CD... :] I haven't listened to them for a long time though. I searched for the drummers comics when you first recommended them, but I wasn't able to find them anywhere. I'll check out those others you mentioned. How was the Lightning Bolt gig? I hope you used earplugs (take care of your ears... tinnitus is a bitch!) What do you study? I used to study philosophy, and then I started working with computers.. IT...

Hey! I am enjoying my drawing classes immensely, they are going very well. I definitely want to embark on some sort of drawing project, but I still got my inherent laziness to conquer. Funny that you wrote to me, as I was just on a small comics-reading binge - mostly "Les Cites Obscures" by Schuiten and Peeters. It's a really beautiful series about architecture, that is sadly not available in English. I've also finished Mezzo&Pirus' books, and I want to recommend them to you again, the stories are fantastic. Other than that, mostly some odd stuff here and there. I've seen Tezuka's work but never read 'A Drifting Life', let me know how you like it. To be honest I don't really think you'll like any grindcore album.. :] It's loud music with a lot of screaming, I enjoy it for its directness, but given your tastes, I'd be surprised if you like it... Hey, I'm all about Shannon and the Clams. I had every song on "I Wanna Go Home" on repeat for most of 2010, especially "When You're On." I'm holding out for the day they break out and make it to the east coast. Anyway, thanks for the last.fmship. It seems I really like the music you like.

First of all a very good 2011 to you..! I've read Mezzo & Pirus "Hold-Up" yesterday in the library. It's a very good western story. Every character is nasty and unlikeable, and the plot is interesting and told well. I can definitely recommend that.. I'm looking now for their "King of the Flies", it seems pretty good, there's a long preview of that on the Fantagraphics site... Yeah, I love the Moebius short stories as well, especially his visual style. I haven't had any luck in tracking down any of the other things that you mentioned, but I'll try again.. What are you reading at the moment? Oh and incidentally, I've registered for drawing lessons :]

I'm so about to hop a bus to you, even if I have to participate in some questionable activities to get the money ;) (okay, haha, maybe not. But you get the sentiment...) So how are the local artists coming? I need to do that sometime. I don't even really know any local musicians. A few from St. Louis and Arkansas, but there are actually a lot of bands around Springfield, too (an overwhelming number of them just happen to be shitty hardcore bands though :/) But yeah. Good luck! And maybe I'll try to look some up tonight xD You doin' alright, then? I'll be online for most the night if you wanna chitty chat. <3

i hope iowa treats me well, too. usually i'm subjected to several days of bitterly cold and snowy weather. it's generally much colder in the midwest during the winter than around here. and hotter in the summer. i'm only spending the 21st-31st in Iowa. I'm pretty much already ready to be back in the 'scow and i haven't left yet. i kind of thought that would happen with YLB. they were amazing live, though. The singer was intense! gosh, i think that (you're really going to love what you're getting into) all the time at the record store. Pretty much all the time. Not to brag too much, but we've got some kick ass shit at DBR, imo. the slaughterhouse protest went well. the teevee and print media both came out and i was interviewed on the evening news that night! ha, it was good. the hot box and daniel ryan's analog hour are getting married for next semester's radio schedule. it shall be named the analog collective. all vinyl all the time. are you going to do a show?i hope yer feeling better.

A tick tree might mark maths homework but would be very efficient at doing so as each branch would wield a red biro simultaneously ticking (or crossing) the answers from an entire school's worth of sums.

cont. We have a lot of new stuff since the last time you were in. Lots. It's super great. It's a job I really look forward to because I get to find crazy stuff I've never listened to before and let the records spin. It has been hard watching some things go, but I think of it as an exercise in detachment, letting some of my material connections to the world go free. I pretty much put everything I owned into the store. The only think not there now are my collectibles, which will soon either be at the store for sale or sold on amazon or ebay. Also, I like seeing people excited about my music collection while browsing it, or buying something from my collection and knowing that they're really going to love that record they bought. It makes me happy to see other people made happy by music. No crazy plans yet. I'm going back home to Iowa for about 10 days, then I'm going to be back to Moscow on the 31st, then will chill/work on my thesis until the spring semester begins. How about you?

I feel the same about Y La Bamba. They were super freakin' good. I hadn't listened to them before the show and only knew what I'd read about them. I was totally amazed. I really think they do all have super magical powers. I am wondering if their studio recordings capture the awesomeness of their live show. Horse Feathers was pretty great, too. BDB is alright. I like them well enough. I've seen them once before, too.. opening for Horse Feathers at the Nuart in the summer of '09, I think. PETA puts a lot of people off, but that's sort of what they do. They use their "extreme" message to make people think about the effect their actions have on other living beings. I met a few people who worked out of the national office during my time as a pretty regular protester and found them all to be great people. I definitely see why people are turned off by some of their antics, though. I am sort of on the fence about their tactics, but they do serve a purpose, I think.

I grew up with the European classics, which I got from the library. In college I got interested again and read more American stuff. I get a lot out of going to comics shops here in Amsterdam, and from the internet: www.fantagraphics.com , http://www.tcj.com/ , http://hoodedutilitarian.blogspot.com/ Fantagraphics hosts a lot of 20+ page pdf files from a lot of their releases, so it is easy to get a good impression of a lot of stuff. The Hooded Utilitarian is a good blog with a lot of very serious reviews of comics. When it comes to magazines, Mome is always a nice anthology of different comics, but it is expensive and may be difficult to get though. I've also got to know a lot of stuff from forums that I frequent.

Hey! Thanks for your reply. Yeah, the new Moebius editions suck greatly, I loathe the new coloring. I mostly like Moebius' short stories, and wordless stories ("The World of Edena"). I live in the Netherlands - the French/Belgian comics culture is very present here. I think we are mostly in agreement about autobiography - I think Crumb does it well, the rest not so much. Hm, who would you call a really proficient draughtsman? I can only think of Jaime Hernandez, Eddie Campbell, Bill Sienkiewicz, the Blacksad guy, and maybe some from the more mainstream side of things (which I don't know). What I really don't like is that a lot of "underground comics" look really alike... Childish drawing, so called "serious" themes... They pretend to be independent, but a lot of them are just so similar, it's depressing... Yeah, Powell's book should be good, I've read parts of it. I'll give my impressions when I've finished it.

Well, I definitely recommend Nietzsche. I've read a lot of his stuff, but I need to go back and go through it again, plus some. Unfortunately the philosophy dept at UI doesn't really focus too much on existential/postmodern stuff so N. doesn't come up a whole lot :( Yeah, you can really tell that they don't have a crack team of cooks at the co-op deli at all times. A lot of the stuff there is bland and boring. I got a butternut squash deli salad there the other day and figured it would be awesome, but somehow they turned butternut squash into a flavorless concoction, aside from the onions. For shame. My vegan diet used to be more balanced, then I started grad school. It's less balanced, for sure, but I've also gained 30 pounds since 3 years ago when I started grad school.. I did used to be involved in PETA protests at slaughterhouses and on the KFC campaign. So I suppose I was a peta pet. I haven't read comics in years.I've been in college for 9 years straight.little time for rec reads
