Well, for me Garrincha was greater (in popularity) than Pele in 1958 and, above all, in 1962. And we have a tendency to love the underdog :) In fact, I think the majority of brazilians don't quite have a great love for Pele, today; he constantly "pisa na bola" (commits giants blunders) when he decides to opine about things... anything.

The "Vanguarda Paulista" was somewhat underground, with some exceptions, but left its marks on modern popular music. I forgot to talk to you about Arrigo Barnabé, Itamar Assumpção... It's a movement full of goodies, worth the search! Something that can match of Baden Powell's samba-jazz it's difficult, but there's a album I believe you don't know already and the name's "Quarteto Novo". It's instrumental, and was formed by four of the best instrumentalists of your music on the mid 60s: Hermeto Pascoal (THE SOLO STUFF IS AWESOME!), Heraldo do Monte (genius on the guitar), Theo de Barros and Airto Moreira.

I always prefer the ladies with a more eccentric type of voice, so I love Tetê Espindola (some people likes to compare her with Kate Bush, but it's bullshit!), look for the albuns "Piraretã" and "Pássaros na Garganta". Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges masterpiece "Clube da Esquina" is another "clichê" classic of "Best Brazilian Albums" lists but, hey, it's really a great album with great singers and compositions. Milton have others fantastics works, and there's others greats "mineiros" singers too, for exemple this little thing of love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6fne0LL620 I always write too much... well, I'll pass you some others names another time...

I'm always hesitant when people ask me for recommendation of brazilian music, because there's so much out there... well, singers that I can think now, there's of course the bossa nova-tropicália people. In terms of bossa, I prefer female vocals. Above all, Nara Leão. You already must be familiar with her, anyway. but I absolutely recommend the album "Dez anos depois". I like the early recordings from Maria Bethania, when the bossa meets the northeast sounds. Gal Costa too have a wonderful voice and a fenomenal work in the mid 60s and 70s, on par of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. You said that you already listened to Baden Powell and Vinícius de Moraes, do you know the album "Os afro-sambas", by the two together? It's samba, bossa and traditional in the same time, absolutely beautiful. In the 70s there's Belchior, whose first album is superb (not a great voice, but a wonderful songwriter).

The 'death threat' thing doesn't bother me at all, I just figured instead of starting an internet flame war, I would use it as a selling point, like a politician. I'm not philosophically opposed to 'record labels' I just don't spend a lot of time sending unsolicited demos, as they generally go unlistened, so I figure I'm better off making my own luck, and internet marketing for forever. There are a couple labels that are interesting to me, namely Ecstatic Peace. For the most part I just perform around my state playing fiddle tunes and bluegrass and wedding music, so the stuff I record on my own time is kind of 'way outside' as the natural response to playing straight-laced all day.

The early Ponty is some of my favorite jazz stuff, outside of Coltrane. Thank you for listening, I hope you find some more sad instrumental tunes!
