I catch myself sometimes thinking stuff like, "pop music is garbage," but then I remember The Smiths were very much a pop band, etc. Of course, that was a much different time and bands got pigeonholed as pop music differently. Pop music nowadays seems like too much of a spectator sport. For example Lady Gaga isn't very good musically, yet tons of people flock to her shows expecting to be awestruck by her routine. I have a different perspective of what constitutes a good performance and it has very little to do with stage antics. I dunno where I was going with that, but pop can be legit, guess it always depends on the artist in question. I understand about Loveless, can never make it through the album in one sitting, I just end up listening to Sometimes on repeat. Kind of funny how the British music journalists decided that Britpop was the shit and shoegaze was a joke. I don't think that the artists in either of those genres even considered themselves as belonging to those genres.

Sorry about the late reply, this website keeps fucking up on me so I kind of ditched it for a while. I think for the most part I just let subjectivity rule because it's always a circular battle. As far as hip-hop goes I guess I agree and disagree with you, there is some rap I would find equally as deep as something any rock musician has made. Yes a lot of it is about banging but at the same time art comes from what you experience firsthand and for some people that's all they had that was their perspective therefore isn't it equally as artistic a statement as anyone else. Also different intents and purposes, some people just flat out suck at writing, some are intellectuals and some people are just actual criminals, hip-hop is a weird world.I agree with you about MBV, I try to get into Loveless but find myself wanting to just listen to something else instead. I get that without them shoegaze as it is known wouldn't really exist, but that's not to say that they are the best purveyors ever

I love it when people say shit like that hahah, I feel like you have to really chase them down the rabbit hole in order to convince them that Kanye West isn't a more prolific songwriter than Paul McCartney (one I heard recently) or something like that. I tend to let people try and substantiate their claim, but when it's really bad like that I usually don't even try. But in my mind I'm like fuck outta here. But hey people are gonna have their notions about the art they like, who am I to try and dissuade them. I've heard the cliché that shoegaze sounds like a broken vacuum, but never from someone being serious. So do you like black metal when it's not like some kind of crossover or experimental style? But yeah that DP Robert Richardson is probably one of the best of at least the last 50 years, I'm sure you seen his other works with Tarantino and Scorsese. Do you like Alejandro Jodorowsky?

The Conjuring and its sequel were pretty good, definitely abused the "based on a true story" tagline lol. Natural Born Killers is rad, Oliver Stone's last good film IMO. I first heard Leonard Cohen in a skate video, Baker 3 actually. I can't speak for the whole world, but Western audiences definitely seem to equate commercial success to artistic merit. Not to mention that underground cinema is horribly represented most of the time, either through media outrage or religious groups complaining, which mostly amounts to stupid ass people tarnishing the reputations of great filmmakers and their works. Same thing goes for music, not to mention that if you enjoy anything remotely hard to find or interpret, or most times not even, someone will just call you a nerd or hipster. Such a nonsensical term to describe a person, it has little to no tangible meaning now or even historically really.

Dude it's starting to get sort of uncanny, maybe we should stop talking about death. For the first time in my life I'm really starting to worry about the generation of artists that are currently in old age. That's really sad that Leonard Cohen passed, I haven't heard him in years, but yeah nothing I could say would sum up his legacy. Hollywood remakes are really getting out of control, it seems like nothing is safe, and if the original filmmaker has died or something it still gets the green light. I'm going to just leave this planet if David Lynch's works somehow are remade, I know he wouldn't let that happen in his lifetime though. Not saying that all remakes are shit, but most of them amount to the artistic equivalent of using tracing paper. My only complaint about the Blair Witch Project is that the ending was somewhat anticlimactic, but I've always found it to be scary. It did more or less invent the found footage genre which has seen some interesting releases since. The August Underground trilogy for instance is probably the absolute deepest of on-screen depravity that I've ever seen, I don't know if that makes it significant though. Gotta hand it to horror and sci-fi for advancing the art of practical effects. HG Lewis the godfather of gore just passed away a few months actually.

Hell yeah have you heard Danny Brown's newest album? I bet it would be right up your alley if you haven't heard it yet. Damn I heard that Blair Witch was terrible, it's a shame because the first one was so good and also influential. Same thing with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original was a masterpiece but the rest of the series isn't worth mentioning besides maybe the 2003 remake. I haven't listened to Have a Nice Life enough, but if they're anything like that guy's other project Giles Corey then I'm sure it's pretty depressing stuff. Do you like Deafheaven? Never could get into them for some reason, always thought they were shit.

It sucks to fear the inevitable, I like how modest mouse put it, "You always told me life's a dam that breaks, Here it comes. If you sit still or if you run, Here it comes." Personally I don't believe that consciousness can end. I was nearly pronounced dead once and I don't know if it means anything but the whole experience felt like being in a dream and I had this impulse to wake up but it didn't happen for a long time. But since I obviously didn't actually die, it might have just been some kind of dream survival state. All I can say is that life really is filled with some invaluable feelings and experiences and I really don't think that just ends when the body dies since the body isn't the person. I think it's like you said, it's like before you're born you spend infinity in that cosmic waiting room, but I think that place is really more like a beautiful dream. I don't know if you celebrate Halloween or whatever but it's always got me thinking about death, binging on horror movies. Yo do you like hip-hop much?

Mortality is a trip, the more I learn about it the less I wish I knew. I used to be all about live fast die young mentality but something just changed I guess, I fucked up too many times lol. I would say don't underestimate how happy a person can still be even under the worst circumstances, it's all part of the same dream, better to just love all of it I'd say. I know exactly what you mean about people considering the body to be the person themselves, but it's just a vessel with a person inside or in an aura around or something. As for the afterlife, Shakespeare more or less wrote that to die is pretty much just to sleep, whatever that means. I've heard it said to die is to wake up. At this point I kind of feel like it is what you make it, just like life.

Yeah man I think a lot of skaters do in fact indulge in some of the more dangerous habits. My guess is more probably do than don't though. And if it's not one thing though it's another, I guess cancer can creep up and snatch you just as easily as overdosing on drugs can. Makes me wonder what life even is a lot. It sucked when Lou Reed died, I'm not looking forward to Neil Young or Bob Dylan passing either. I think Morrissey is battling cancer right now so that sucks. It's eerie as fuck that we were talking about this because on October 12, Dylan Rieder, one of the most world-renowned pro skaters died of complications due to leukemia at the age of 28. it's really shocked and devastated the skateboard community, his style of skating and even the way he dressed are reflected and imitated by so many people in modern skate culture and in turn the rest of Western fashion culture, probably even the entire world, like this dude was one of my personal favorites of all time through at least 10 years of my own life growing up skateboarding. There's a video by the skate company Alien Workshop called Mind Field that he had a video part in and he used the song Coast to Coast by Elliott Smith, I would recommend it to anyone who needs a perfect example of poetry in motion. Sorry to go on and on about it but I'm actually pretty bummed, and the death of a celebrity that I don't know usually doesn't particularly move me. Thanks for the reccs though, yeah my library isn't all that current anymore and it's still missing a lot
