I IS quite interesting, I agree. I think what you're thinking of is Operation Crossroads, which took place at Bikini Atoll, which was (is?) part of the Marshall Islands. They dropped several bombs there for testing, and since nuclear weapons are quite expensive, they placed Naval ships in the water at various distances to test how they were affected by the blast, immediate radiation, and fallout. I highly doubt they told the poor workers how dangerous it was when they had to go in and scrape off paint samples from the boats, as back then, paint was lead based... and we all know how much lead attracts radiation because of its protective quality.
