I just don't believe arguments in Last.fm shoutboxes really decide anything. To me and most metalheads "metal" has a strict definition and does not include anything that does not descend from Purple/Sabbath => Priest/Maiden => related stuff. Some people call "metal" any band that uses distorted guitars and sounds "heavy" enough. That's what is called pluralism.

You totaly missed my message. Symphonic metal is metal, but symphonic music isn't metal. Goth metal is metal, but goth music (goth rock) isn't metal. Thrash metal is metal, but hardcore, grindcore, crust punk isn't metal. One thing influences another, but does not turn into this thing.

There's a number of metal genres influenced by classical music, electronic music, and whatever. So what? Did Paganini became metal for influencing Yngwie and Luca Turilli? Moreover, grindcore is not a subgenre of metal.

I don't try to change your music taste. Keep listening to mallcore, but don't call it metal. Hardcore was created by late 70's punks. Metal was created by Black Sabbath half decade before that. This two genres are unrelated, escept that two use guitars, vocals and drums.

You really don't know anything about heavy metal music. Hardcore is a branch of punk music and is unrelated to metal. Read some literature, or watch Metal: A Headbanger's Journey to know what metal music means.

I'm really digging Black Cobra right now for sludge, Lazarus Blackstar is good too. Giant Squid, Khang, Bongripper, Bongzilla, Weedeater, Core, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Crowbar, Old Man Gloom, Harvey Milk. I think that should be enough to start you off. Check out Church of Misery, Sleep, Coffins, and The Arm and Sword of a Bastard God for more good doom/sludge.
