hey NarooN, I'm probably half of the views on the yt videos you put up of the Papa Sprain demos (and maybe another third is people I've sent them to), curious if you'd want to talk about Gary & maybe help me get in touch w him, I'm doing an interview/nonfiction music blog thing myself

Gary's sent me virtually all the lyrics to all of his songs and I'll send them over if you're interested. He probably hates me now but I'm grateful he did!

I am second biggest Papa Sprain fan. My favourite song is "Toppled King Of The World"

I think the demos and the peel session are my favourite Papa Sprain material. And thanks for mentioning that! I'll keep an out for that. Gary seems to be an underappreciated master of beauty.

Ahh yes, it's the My Bus collab with Joe from Butterfly Child (another favourite of mine)

your descriptions of those shoegaze bands below were spot on and well written. what subgenres or cross-genres of shoegaze do you personally enjoy for their replayability?

Hmm, I'd say stuff like psychedelic & acid rock, ethereal wave, dreampop, noisepop/noise rock, and 'space rock' are the closest genres that either intertwine with shoegaze, emit notions of it, or were derived from it in various ways for sure. E.g. the band "Flying Saucer Attack", they were one of those bands who defied the notion of being labeled with a tag or two. It was a combination of ambient folk, blistering noise-pop, and drone. But David Pearce would take a track and mix some acoustic guitar with multiple layers of distorted, hazy dreamy shoegaze-chords of doom and then overlay on top of THAT with an augmented lap-steel style singular meandering guitar tone over the whole thing. "My Dreaming Hill" is the best example of one of those tracks. I just adore that band so much, lol. There's also genres like "metalgaze" which is also sometimes called post-metal, which is pretty much atmospheric metal.

thanks for your reply, i always feel compelled to listen to the bands you describe solely based on your description lol. i find myself drawn to shoegaze/dream pop and shoegaze/ noise pop. but my next step is metal shoegaze like alcest, jesu. good stuff :)

I couldn't recommend Jesu enough to someone who digs shoegaze. It starts off as straight-up atmospheric industrial metal with the self-titled debut, and just continues to expand beyond that. You'll find at least one moment of greatness on every main album at the least, until you get to the 2013 album, which was the last 'real' Jesu album. After that it was nothing but collabs with the guy from Sun Kil Moon & Red House Painters... which you'd think would be an amazing collab, but really wasn't. Oh well, heh. "Sun Day" might still be my favorite Jesu track, but there's lots of amazing metalgazing to be had with the group.

Sure thing bud! Bethany Curve have been a favorite of mine for years, really amazing stuff. 'Alison's Halo' are one of the most insanely underrated shoegaze/dreampop bands ever, definitely get that album. Unwound isn't really a shoegaze group, but their album "Leaves Turn Inside You" is transcendentally far-out and has a lot of gazey/psychey songs on it. 'Fleeting Joys' are a group that many said filled in the void left behind by MBV before MBV finally came back. 'Coaltar of the Deepers' are a Japanese group who never focused on one style, but are basically a shoegaze group who fuses lots of metal and alt-rock elements into their sound. 'Rumskib' was a great Danish dreampop/shoegaze duo for a while. 'Southpacific' were an instrumental group whom everybody labeled as space-rockers, but the group hated that term, they are pretty much transcendental instrumental shoegaze with a heavy emphasis on grooves and rhythm and many layers of guitar waves.

(Damn these character limits!) 'Seven Percent Solution' is another shoegaze/psyche-rock group from the 90's that many don't know of. Really good stuff. 'Volplane' is another shoegaze group whose compositions were characterized by low-BPM airy jams reminiscent of the slowcore genre. 'Soundpool' released 3 albums and were known for their creative take on shoegaze by mixing it with electro elements and then with the 3rd album, pretty much creating the subgenre discogaze. 'Tears Run Rings' is another good gazer group to check out. 'Alcian Blue' were fantastic at creating moody droney noisy shoegaze songs. 'SIANspheric' dropped an insanely good debut album and followed it up with post-punk & psychedelic infused shoegaze in the years to follow. 'Sadesper Record' was a nice blend of shoegaze with jungle/drum & bass elements. 'Jesu' is a hard-hitting mixture of low-bpm drone/doom metal with shoegaze. 'Palms', the side-project of Deftones frontman Chino, is introspective metal-gaze.

Just so you know I'm pretty sure they haven't officially announced backwards compatibility for Rock Band instruments. They said they are "trying really hard" I believe.

You should watch the trailer. Yes there is no support for drums / vocals. Yes I have no interest in the game but still you have to give them credit for trying something different. Rock Band 4 will likely be pretty similar to the games we already have but that's fine with me. They have GH TV mode where you can play along to music videos that will be updated regularly. Apparently that is free. That's pretty neat. The live action video is a really cool concept but I can't see them not getting repetitive quickly. However I would love to be proven wrong. Ultimately I'll likely won't get this game on the account of no backwards compatible DLC.

I can see how it can be easy to blame Microsoft but you have to look at it from their perspective. With Rockstar, multiplayer characters take up very minimal data to store. They are likely the ones who are in charge of storing that data. With things like Rock Band DLC Sony and Microsoft host the DLC on their servers and are basically in charge of selling it and making sure people can download it. It would kind of be unfair to expect them to have to let people download it from their servers who they did not get any cut of the profits from. Sure maybe have a one time transfer fee but that just seems like a very big headache. It sucks but oh well. Also based on how much more popular I feel Rock Band was on the 360, I think this is going to make a lot more people open to buying Xbox One's. I've gone from zero interest to seriously considering one just so I can keep my DLC.

"Fuck I hate making this music based FPS. Let's just make Rock Band 4 instead!" Too bad all my DLC is tied to 360 / Xbox One. I might just buy that.

I heard that there were lyrics coming with the free version of the A Copygod download. Do you still have them? i can only find "One Seater" online, and CDBaby doesn't send additional text data containing the lyrics.

At the moment not at the top of my head.. I have been listening to Mr.Kitty in my Car over and over again so I can't really get that out of my disc drive. Not sure how much you like kinda poppy darkwave.

If it gets funded this is going to be a very long year. Also they should have made it a 30 day kickstarter for maximum chance of success.

Hello! I've seen you on youtube, the ikd-sj forum and deviantart, and found out you also have a last.fm. Even though compatibility seems low, I'm pretty sure I'll like the music you listen to, so I'll listen to some, haha.
