You listened to Joanna Newsom! How do you like her? She's one of my favorite musicians, and her lyrics are extremely poetic. Emily is a fantastic song. Two of my other favorites are "Autumn" and "Occident." I see you also listened to Nest. That's a great neofolk band ^_^

Meh. Smoke, Open, Small Hands, and Cheers Darlin’ were okay. The only artists that I listen to that sound like “pop” in some way are groups like Joanna Newsom (try “Peach, Plum, Pear” and “Kingfisher” for starters) and my English teacher’s friend’s band Railbird. Some ingenious stuff. Moby is another one (try “Mistake” and “Slipping Away”). Then there’s Mogwai, which is a somewhat popular current post-rock band (try “Take Me Somewhere Nice”).

Haha, indeed. As was Turisas. I don't like them either. I see you listened to "Sons of Winter and Stars." That is an epic masterpiece. Anything by Wintersun is. Jari Mäenpää is a genius.

I am the same exact way. The B category totally has the better bands. The thing with the term “pagan metal” is that it is based on more of a lyrical theme than an actual musical style—the only requirement is that the music has folk elements. So a folk metal band could sound the same exact way as a pagan metal band—but they’d just not really be singing about gods and such. Some bands in the second category would be considered melodic death metal or folk metal. Wintersun is absolutely one of my favorite bands. I saw them live in 2012, and Ensiferum last year. They were both freaking amazing. Tyr is kind of irritating to me (I had to see them live when they opened for Ensiferum, bleh). …Falkenbach is pretty nice. I really love pagan/folk extreme metal, bc it tends to always be very fast, melodic, technical—and best of all, not too depressing! ...D'awww *shy face* :P

One power-metally, normal singing pagan metal band is Týr. Listen to “Blood of Heroes.” (There’s also Turisas and Skyforger.).......... *B) On the more extreme side (harsh vocals): Ensiferum (some singing too), Wintersun (not really pagan, but amazing symphonic metal), Kalmah, [Moonsorrow,] Windir, Eluveitie, Cruachan, Norther, Equilibrium, and Catamenia............. Try “Coldbound” by Catamenia,“Heroes to Us” by Kalmah, “Lai Lai Hei” by Ensiferum, “Savior” by Norther, “A Pagan Storm” by Wolfchant, and “Todeswalzer” by Windir. ........ *what I personally prefer

Well, I’ve been listening to metal for a long time, and I’ve always been eager to learn as much as possible about the genre, trying out a lot of different types of bands--and as many as possible. Mainly using Youtube, Wikipedia, friends, and forums. I listened to a lot of power metal when I was a freshman, and I still do every so often. ...aaand I basically avoid mainstream stuff entirely.

I just listened to “Welcome Home” and “The Running Free,” and I have to say I was surprised. I was expecting them to be much worse, and I see why you like them. They’re upbeat and still interesting to listen to. C&C have some progressive influence, I understand, but I don’t think they are accurately labelled “progressive rock.” To me, prog rock will always be Rush, King Crimson, Gryphon, Porcupine Tree, etc. Maybe they could be considered progressive 21st century rock. I also wasn’t expecting such a prominence of guitar in their music. In fact, they sort of remind me of the genre of power metal. Ever try it? You might like Sonata Arctica (try “Paid In Full”/anything by them) or Avantasia (try “Lost in Space”). …(If you like those, try Stratovarius – Black Diamond, which I like.)

Haha, yeah. I have to say, I thought they were some… you know… unmetal band when I saw that picture. I do hope that isn’t his own blood. And I’m guessing that they hate life and their name is simply ironic… About Deafheaven, I would recommend the tracks “Sunbather” and “Vertigo.” Anything from that album really. (It just so happens that Neige has a spoken part in the track “Please Remember,” but it’s not the best song on the album)

Agreed. I am not fond of thrash either. (I'm okay with Anthrax) Or ultra brutal death metal. It just isn't "serious" enough for me. Do you use the radio provided by last.fm or do you use Spotify? (I use YouTube practically all the time, to be honest)

Here are some better recommendations considering you like Alcest so dearly: Explosions in the Sky, Slowdive, God is an Astronaut, This Will Destroy You, and a bit more on the metal side, Agalloch.

You're lucky you know how to play the drums! I am completely clueless when it comes to that instrument. Gardening is great, as it makes you actually get outside. I don't get outside nearly as much as I should, haha. ...I can't draw males or females. And I recommend Sankarihauta by Moonsorrow if anything... I have to admit Huuto is a bit long for a first time listener! The band might be a little too black-metal-y for you... I can think of some better recommendations if you didn't like them, it just happened to be what I was listening to. Now may I ask, how exactly do you scrobble? It seems like you get a lot of great variety, if you do use the radio.

Yes, I am indeed a jerk and I do have quite a tendency to brag. Sorry about that :/ My family is somewhat musical. My school made everyone play an instrument when we were eight, and my mom really encouraged me to keep up with it. I took violin lessons from this old lady for a while. I guess I am really lucky to have had those opportunities as a kid… Now I know nothing about your background, or if there exist any financial setbacks or whatever—but you really don’t require a teacher to learn music. All you need is the instrument itself and, nowadays, the internet! …Tell me some more about your art endeavors

I’m not too great at art, but I wish I was. I started violin when I was eight, then piano a few years later, followed by guitar once I discovered the epicness of metal, haha. Thanks! And I seriously love the harp. It really builds an atmosphere. Guitar is something you can kind of teach yourself... What are your interests outside of listening to music? (you seriously don’t have to answer me if you don’t feel like it) If they don’t conflict, you should definitely try to pursue something like acoustic guitar on the side. It is a really versatile instrument, and you can pretty much just learn chords to be fairly proficient at it. Same with piano. Don’t doubt yourself! Sure you don’t have to be in a band, but being able to make music with your own hands is an extremely fulfilling accomplishment. Definitely don’t put it out of the question. And I see you were listening to Pallbearer \m/ Freaking amazing band in my opinion.

I have friends who are in bands, but I kind of do my own thing. I’m working on this project that basically is all piano music right now… I can send you some of it once I’m done sometime in the summer if you want. In the future I am planning on starting my own band; I just haven’t yet found people with the same ideas as I have. Thanks for asking!
