Was really good. Took them like 5-10 minutes to get something going, but after that it was pure bliss. I sat with my eyes closed for a good half of the show, in a trance-like state. They played straight for close to 2 1/2 hours.

Oh wow. Why does Buffalo get such good shows? It does not seem like a locale for avante garde jazz. of course, I've only been there once, for a few hours.

Buffalo? I've always been surpised that they have major league sports teams, and now they get Bennink/Gayle? The fuck?

At the art gallery they set up like 25 chairs across a huge area that could have fit either more chairs or more standing people, and there were a lot more than 25 of us there, so that part was really annoying. The worst part was the fact that bennink's drum set was right behind a brick column that was in the middle of the floor. Luckily I could still see him well because of a reflection in a window. Annoying at first, but it all worked out. They played real well together, really enjoyed themselves.

Wow, I'm scared to hear that he needed medical assistance, but if he still played fine, then he seems okay. Yeah, I was at the show, and it was really good. Venue was not the best, but they were showing some of Bnnink's artwork as well so I guess they wanted to have it in an art gallery. So when the two would get real loud the room would have trouble handling all of it and it would get quite muddy. Too many blank walls. But still a great show.

Sure, I'm always up for trying the milk before buying the cow. Braxton was, of course, sick. At Saturday's show he conducted two of his compositions, Nos. 103 (for seven trumpets) and 169 (for brass quintet). 103 was a really good exploration of the timbre possibilities of the trumpet, with a shitload of mutes being used simultaneously (some even using CD's). Each soloist took a distinctly different solo too, utiliizng extended techniques and such. No. 169 seemed weak because it followed 103, but was still enjoyable. The tubaist(Jay Rozen ,actually) was really sick, and kept using a crush pie plate as a mute. I was expecting more from the other four players, who definitely played well, but just not as adventurously as I had hoped.

Hey, I'd like to think it's still on. I spoke directly with Han Bennink's manager a few months ago, and that's where I initially heard of the gig. So I'm not quite sure if I had any business posting it on here! It's not on ICP's website either. I'd give An Die Musik a call before showing up.

Oooh, don't remind me. That'll be the second time this summer I'll miss Allen, and last time he was with Weasel Walter. God I was pissed. Fuckin' family wedding. I got drunk on free booze, that meant I was angry-drunk, listening to wedding music. And this Thursday I'll be in Florida with my family. I do, however, have all of these other Ars Nova shows to enjoy: http://www.arsnovaworkshop.com/.

PEQ is a nice surprise. Less noisy than expected (read feared); but intense, edgy and fast free jazz. Hits jsut the right note for me between traditional free jazz and noise. Also satisfies my urges to discover some good new modern jazz artists who play some great jazz. Definitely among the best of 2007.

hey, I've been trying to find this John Butcher album with Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and Michael Zerang on percussion, do you or anyone you might know have it? It's completely impossible to find. I've tried buying it and no one has it in stock anymore.
