I'm pretty sure it's very relative, but this relativity has some measuring units. Fennesz has 2.3M plays, NMH/Pavement have 10 times more, and Interpol have 63M, almost 3/4 of Lady Gaga's plays and 1/4 of The Beatles's :)) I think they are pretty well-known. Which ambient artists do you recommend? I started listening to Brian Eno, but I must be in a proper mood in order to digest this type of music :)

NMH/Pavement/Interpol are quite mainstream and well-known for the indie/hipster/pitchfork/mu/what.cd community :P Remember that Pavement were headliners at P4k Music Festival ;)) I'd rather sense The Who as being more obscure for the "new generation kids" (although they are one of the greatest bands ever alongside with The Beatles/RS/Kinks and maybe The Byrds/Beach Boys/Animals)

Those occasional albums are present even in my list (mainly the prog/experimental ones - see King Crimson), albums that you listen once per month, but blow your mind each time you do this. About Dylan, I think it's BOB > H61 > BiABH > BotT > the rest...as for Radiohead, OK Computer is the best...the rest of them change in time (2nd place could be either The Bends or Kid A...In Rainbows & Amnesiac are still high), the ones I can predict are HTTT and Pablo Honey (PH being miles away from the other albums).
