The album cover always evoked in me a hidden primordial instinct of clicking those polyethylene bubbles with my fingers

You are probably listening to the recently released remastered version. It is not just remastered, it is heavily modified. Don't listen to it, listen to the original album :)

The 'loudness war' started in 2000-2001. On "Version 2.0" (1998 !) the level is still quite normal. Check the spectrograms of the CD in any program. Garbage didn't actively participate in this race for a 'high flat level', especially in the 90s, when they worked very subtly with sampling and multiple sound overlays. Of course, you can find anything in the reissues of the 2000s-2020s

IMHO the loudness war started in the mid 90s, when studio equipment like brickwall limiters came out. ...Don't know what release you are listening to, but the Steve Hofmann link says the 20th anniversary remaster has the same poor dynamic range as the original CD release(!) BTW. Even reddit discussions say that if you want more dynamics you have to listen to the vinyl releases: https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/qx4ruh/comment/hlbeo7n/

The original pressing of "Version 2.0" sounds fine and has nothing to do with brickwall production. Compare it to Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication," which came out a year later — that one is genuinely painful to listen to. Now 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 is actual brickwalling.

I first listened to this album back in 1998 and I still listen to it today! Just brilliant stuff!

Still cannot decide if their debut or sophomore album is better, but I think I'm leaning towards this one...

1998 was such an underwhelming year in music (considering 1997 was GREAT), but this album saved it.

I think this album was one of the ones I loved growing up that foreshadowed an interest in new wave...this and a Blondie best of.

My original was literally scratched and ruined after playing non-stop during various house moves for 2 years at the end of the 90's. Re-bought it again last week, and forgot how immense this record is. One of those ones I can listen to from start to end without skipping a single track. So glad to have this back in my life. I had forgotten how relevant it was. Underrated gold.

I used to listen to this in the 90s. Pretty good stuff. It is nice to rediscover it 10 years latter and still find it good.
