Why did no one tell me Flex Lavender dropped? I am speechless, more proof that they were one of the best bands to ever do it.

I hear you! I found out pretty randomly myself. This was very much an under-the-radar thing, pretty much zero promotion. Originally, the plan was for Saint Marie Records to put out Flex Lavender as their long "lost" LP, finally seeing the light of day. But in a bit of bad timing, Saint Marie gradually transitioned from being a label to being a brick-and-mortar record store, so that left Flex in a state of limbo. I don't know what went into this decision, but it seems that the band decided just to release it themselves as a purely digital release - initially on iTunes, other digital outlets eventually too. I'm told that an eventual physical release or something on Bandcamp is possible, but the process of getting to that is a lot more complicated and time-consuming than purely digital. I don't know where that sits now - this was almost a year ago that I first heard all this.

Interesting... it seems that this was posted on Facebook not long after Breadmaker LP was released on Saint Marie in 2015, as a reward for people who pledged to make the Breadmaker release happen. They're sharing the first track from Flex as a preview. Note the proposed cover art for Flex Lavender was completely different. Sadly, the FB page looks like it was eventually abandoned not long after this. Posts afterwards are merely for occasional sales Saint Marie had, the last one in early January 2020, right before Covid hit. https://www.facebook.com/DifferenceEngineOfficial/posts/1094186247261809/

In the press copy for the Saint Marie Records remaster of Breadmaker, it was stated that they had plans to release a "lost" Difference Engine album, which had been recorded as the follow-up to Breadmaker, but was somehow shelved. Instead, Calidad followed sometime later, which ditched the shoegaze for a more bland 90s alt-rock sound. The only problem here is that the Breadmaker reissue was in 2015 ... and then, nothing. Saint Marie Records itself seems have stopped releasing new material of any kind, with the exception of new recordings by Loveblind, the group that the owner of the label himself is in. This is frustrating. Nothing against Loveblind - I highly recommend them to any fans of Curve, Seasurfer, or just damn good post-punky shoegaze. But... I mean, if you have a lost Difference Engine album, my god, man, what is wrong with you? Release the damn album!

The Saint Marie site seems to be getting an upgrade. But here's the text, from https://web.archive.org/web/20220617041508/http://www.saintmarierecords.com/products/557322-difference-engine-breadmaker-2015-reissue "Difference Engine released a series of 7” records on La-Di-Da America and Swirling Worlds, leading to their debut release, Breadmaker in 1994, also on La-Di-Da America. The band then recorded a follow up record, but before it could be released, the band moved on to a different style. Therefore, the follow up was never released. Breadmaker became a much sought-after classic shoegaze record that now has been remastered and reissued on vinyl for the first time. Look for the long lost sophomore release to also be released on Saint Marie next year." Again, this text comes from 2015. "Next year" was 2016. So frustrating.

Would love to hear Calidad after how much I loved Breadmaker. Does anyone have it? Message me.

Yet another tragedy of the death of Bedazzled Records. I wish they'd continued on for a bit longer. They had songs.
