This year Greenbelt, the all-age Arts Festival with its roots in the Christian faith, which keeps thousands of people keep coming back year after year features a great range of music on 5 stages showcasing brand new and classis artists and bands.
Fresh from the release of his first book, The Progressive Patriot in 2006, Billy Bragg makes a welcome return to the Festival he first wowed back in 2003. Billy will headline the mainstage on the Friday night of Greenbelt and also take part in a panel debate on the Saturday around the idea of a new ‘Bill of Rights’.
The full music bill is yet to firm up, but already features an incredibly diverse range of artists from East End old-timers Chas n Dave with a family knees up to Rosie Thomas, friend of Sufjan Stevens, set to return to Greenbelt after her wistful debut with us in 2004.
The rest of the lineup is just starting to shape up. Among the eclectic bag already assembled are Sister Frances Dominica, the children’s hospice pioneer and founder of Helen House (recently the subject of a groundbreaking documentary series on BBC2), the Head of Friends of the Earth, Tony Juniper, world-renowned Jewish theologian Marc Ellis, Greenbelt favourite and Iona Community leader and broadcaster, John Bell and female Muslim activist and writer Naima Bouteldja.
There will also be talks on the abolition of the slave trade, environmental justice and a fresh focus on engaging with – and seeking to understand – Islamic fundamentalism.
On top of all this there will be a vibrant visuals arts and performing arts billing, a literature programme, and a wonderfully deep and inclusive range of worship – from the most ancient to the most cutting edge – on offer. And, of course, Greenbelt continues to build its reputation as a safe and welcoming, family-friendly, all-age event, with a Children’s Festival catering for the 0 – 11s, a full youth programme for teenagers and loads of all-age events across the weekend.
