Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, to folk musician parents, singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Julia Stone grew up performing music with her siblings. Younger brother Angus inspired her to write her own songs, and after a couple of years of performing solo, each performing backup vocals for the other, they collaborated to release two albums of finely crafted, laidback folk, A Book Like This (2007) and Down the Way (2010) which won “Album of the Year” at Australia’s ARIA awards and went triple platinum in France.
In between performing sell-out tours across Australia, Europe and North America as Angus and Julia Stone, Australia’s favourite neo-hippie folk-and-roots duo found time to embark on successful solo projects, and Julia’s results – the delicately melancholic album, The Memory Machine (2010) and the edgier By the Horns (2012) – have taken the world by storm.
Backed by minimalist drums, keys, guitar and backing vocals, Julia’s voice and acoustic guitar (and occasional trumpet) rings clear and true in folksy, confessional originals. Whether in spare, haunting ballads like Somehow and I’m A Liar, heady folk-rock anthems such as The Line That Ties Me and It’s All Ok or gutsy, acoustic versions of songs such as Bloodbuzz Ohio by friends The National, she draws audiences into an intimate space inhabited by Julia and the listener alone, her songs growing on us in a slow burn.
