As for Blind Guardian, I prefer not to think of it as an actual part of their discography. It's... disgraceful. A compositional mess, lack of clear directions, the worst production I've heard in this kind of music for a long time now. My colleague wrote a good review on it but it's in Bulgarian - use Google Translate to get the idea. It's pretty close to my own thoughts on this... thing. Hey :) I'll copy what I wrote about Ensiferum to another friend here: I was pleasantly surprised, actually. Haven't enjoyed their stuff since Victory Songs and while From Afar had its moments, Unsung Heroes hit rock bottom. The new one feels more focused, somewhat back to the roots, more uptempo and aggressive in general, without neglecting the folksy passages. The choirs are cool and they seem to pay homage to some inspirations here and there. For example, there's this crazy song I dig a lot, hinting at Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall right in the middle of the usual Finnish craziness. The DDD epic reminds me of Amorphis' Am Universum era, kinda rad. The production seems a bit off, rawer but I prefer this over nicely polished plastics. Could as well be better on the finished product. I'm not saying Ensiferum rediscovered themselves or anything but it really is the best I've heard of them for a while. Maybe the best they could release at this point.

Sorry for the late reply, I wasn't all that much around during the holidays. Halfway I'd say. He's rapping his part with a WT-ish background running and Sharon chanting. Sounds odd, you have to hear it for yourself. It's hard to explain.

7-8 going to a solid 9. I'm not a grading person so it usually varies a lot. Started with 7, soaked in, moved up... etc.

Haha, it seems like Last.fm gets redesigned each time I log out for a longer period of time. Oh well. Ayreon will hit the market by the end of October, the official announcement should come soon.

Enjoy it :) I need 2-3 more albums to wrap up 2013. Or even just Ayreon, can do without the rest.

I did but it did nothing for me. Was bored halfway through it. Didn't expect anything else so it's not a loss for me.

According to this, we'll get Alcest in January or so.

I'm not really happy with Tyr's release. It has some decent tracks but it's lacking consistency overall. I don't know, at times this band seems to be all about hit & miss. Alcest will most likely release the album in 2014, can't wait.

Will check it out tomorrow to be sure. Can't say I expect much but I might as well be wrong, of course.

Yes but it's a promo vinyl, not even the real thing just yet. Still, priceless to me.

Truth be told, I could never recommend it enough. This or any other DT album for that matter. You either feel it or don't - it was never an easy band to begin with so people expecting to hear "another <something> pt. 2" are better off listening to different music instead of wasting their (and my) time. For me, it's an experience. DT isn't about being "in the middle" and it's foolish to think they'll ever record anything to satisfy expectations. Other than their own, that is. Now, I'm not saying I wouldn't have been fine with an album sharing common nature with their recent releases but in the end, Construct is entirely different. Should I stop enjoying it in order to dig into the reasons behind their decision to choose this direction? I think not. Which makes 'fans' complaining that 'it isn't what they wanted to hear' straight off pathetic.

Immemorial is good but it's totally weird, again. Really digging its chorus. You probably heard bits and pieces of its melody on the first trailer. Photon Dreams is an instrumental - nothing complex about it, it's like an ambient outro or something, but I do like the atmosphere. Sounds like a cool closing theme.

Haha, yes, right on. And Lucifer, maybe... well, pretty much everything filmed for the last album.

I like that part :D Awkward and somewhat repulsive, makes me actually 'feel' something. It's not nearly as disgusting as what Behemoth do in their vids, for example, but I'm starting to wonder if CoB used Grupa 13 for this filming. Could be wrong but I sense a familiar vibe.

Did you check on Transference vid? I liked it quite a lot, you can't go wrong with freak-show in a metal clip, even though the girl looks like a deeply depressed version of Avril Lavigne in a setting similar to what Cradle used in Her Ghost in the Fog. I'd go for a video with a fully developed story any day but it's good for what it is and it's a nice change from Patric Ullaeus' filming technique which has taken over the industry lately.

They say patience is a virtue, right? :P Not that I agree but it's a comforting thought.

What Only You Know and State of Trust have a lot of cleans. Mundane and the Magic... hmm, perhaps The Silence in Between? The keys and the rhythm remind me of its commercial 'gothy' sound. As for Iridium, I'd go for None Becoming due to its similar crushing atmosphere.

Not my cup of tea but the video was pretty good, haha. And the vocalist has an interesting voice, not so common.

I suppose it's safe to blame it on the latter :D Plus, it's the trend of the season.

It's odd, to say the least. I bet they have the necessary resources to make it better.

I wouldn't know - got the client stable for the first time in a long run and unless something fucks up royally, I won't touch it. But there are still many problems with iPod scrobbles which is a different problem. I never know if they will get uploaded from my device to the site and that's one of the reasons to forget to scrobble it most of the time. Oh well.

LI can be quite depressive at times, yes. But it's nice for a change. And you're probably right about the design changes, haha.

Well, there are some hidden gems in the USA. And not so hidden like Agalloch. I sincerely hoped to hear the studio album of Gallowbraid but that's unlikely to happen. Then there's Lost Inside and the more recent Caladan Brood.

Well, the guitars on Construct are mostly used as a background noise so you're free to blame it on their current style. Fine by me, I prefer the mood created by Brändström's keys, not to mention the majority of songs have Sundin written all over them. Can't say I track the love/hate records get, which is one of the reasons to neglect 99% of band's shoutboxes or common reviews. Only care what a bunch of people think and I prefer to discuss it on their own walls or via PMs. Not to mention the 'profound' thoughts of most users after less than 3 spins. Which leads me to Kalmah - I'll get back to you when I listen to it more. Liked some bits and pieces but I'm just not in the right mood for it. Will give it time to sink in and then we'll see. And yep, that's me, a random take from a recent photo shoot. The original is here.

I get you but it doesn't make it easier. You see, the problem I'm having with Construct is that I can tell you what I think of it in short, but I could never really review it, let alone evaluate. It's a weird album which I didn't get at first and now I can't even listen to different music without thinking everything sounds plain and simple like a child's play. It's like a painting with many nuances which speaks to me. Not sure you'll get it since that's how I *feel* it as an artist and designer, kind of obscure and maybe personal. Maybe that's why I experience a complete writer's block whenever I get down to putting it into words. Loved WAtV, like each DT album it had its peculiar nature. But Construct is slower, moody, stripped down and minimalistic. Hope that helps... even though, as I said, it will never be enough for me. As for AA - bits and pieces. Will tell you more these days.

I have them, they're all solid. CoB's album is better than the last three, yes. Kind of back to the roots but not entirely. Still, it's a step in the right direction. The new DT has nothing to do with Character or just about any other album. It's not "another record" or "album pt. 2" at all. If it's closer to anything, that's Projector but again, it's not a copy/paste material.

Don't know yet, they're not included in this promo. But 'Photon Dreams' is one hell of a title, I'd grant them that.

No, no, nothing in common. I doubt I can even speak of solos when it comes to Construct. Like, at least 90% of the guitars are used as background sound, it's a freaking weird formula. I meant the complexity of Character and Fiction, WAtV is nothing compared to those but they used it as a starting point for the atmospheric approach.

Both are cool. CoB returned to the roots a bit which is great, I couldn't listen to their last couple of albums even if someone was paying me money to do it. Sounds like the best release since HCD and I was prepared for another nightmare. DT's album is difficult to get into, it's much more atmospheric than anything they've done. Nothing to do with the technical complexity of Character, Fiction and WAtV. Moody as hell, this one. Mikael is using a lot of clean vocals which I happen to adore just as well, so I'm fine with it.

I heard Amends some time ago, it wasn't bad but for some reason it didn't really get under my skin. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it, don't know. October Tide always puts out great records and this is no exception. Plus it's always a pleasure to hear Tomi singing here and there in addition to Amorphis. Hyporcisy is more on the safe side, less extreme than the last one with mostly mid-paced songs, kinda oldschool. Not bad but nothing spectacular too.
