i love how the artificial panning is mirrored by the pulsation of the strings.

My favourite Magnetic Fields tune. And not because it's got an Irish theme. It's just beautiful.

One of the prettiest songs I've heard written in the last few hundred years...Merritt had said in an interview he panned it like that to induce epilepsy, heh.

Absolutely beautiful. This and Pavement's "Stop Breathing" are my two favorite war songs. Well, I'm not sure I can think of any other war songs at the moment anyhow. I guess maybe the American national anthem is pretty okay. Oh, and the "War! Good gawd y'all... what is it good for?" song is, well, a song about war. And the theme from Star Wars. But I'm pretty sure I like this more.

The other night at a Q&A event, Merrit claimed he found the word "abigail" in a Scrabble dictionary (with the antiquated meaning of a lady's maid) when he was searching for something to come before "Absolutely Cuckoo" alphabetically. He figured it was an Irish name, and that's why it had a servant meaning, and this song formed.
