I prefer the "Children of God" myself. The intimate sound of Jarboe's sweet vocals are best heard in the Children of God version, plus the minimalism of the singly piano adds something to song. Perhaps my favorite part about this song and what really "does" it for me is that the song sounds like a sweet love song, but once you see the title of the song, "Blackmail", you start to assume that this song sounds seductive and backstabbing, as opposed to sincere. Brilliant.

When the piano came in, I felt like vocal would be unnecessary. And it is in my opinion. At least that exposed. Pity, such a good idea.

This song might sound like a plain love song which is as palpable as a globed fruit. But there's a challenging metaphor in it which I've always found very touching and thought-provoking. BLACKMAIL means the payment of MONEY exacted by means of INTIMIDATION. To compare the emotive force spent in love to economical medium of exchange is so clever; but it also shows that to love somebody truly is to accept that your soul will eventually be blackmailed by dread, forlornness and intimidation. That's why you should at first "close your eyes", "say the word", and promise "YOU'LL DO WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND".

I never cared much for Jarboe, to be honest, but this track (well, the proper one on Children of God) is one of the most gorgeous moments in music history.

I prefer the original version (on the CD version of Greed/Holy Money) [3] For fucking real.

the intro reminds me a little bit of "Last night i dreamt that somebody loved me"
