This recording features singers Khamvong Insixiengmai and Thongxhio Manisone. They are joined by Khamseung Syhanoneon khene (khaen), harmonica-like sounding free-reed bamboo instrument. Also featured are the phin, or plucked lute, and cymbals. The opening track is a traditional melody solo for a bamboo "harmonica" called the khene or khaen (a three-foot long bundle of fourteen or sixteen bamboo tubes enclosed in a carved wooden windchest, covering one or more finger holes at a time). Khamvong Insixiengmai is a US based singer from Laos, skilled in the styles of music from his home and the Lao regions of northeastern Thailand. The ensemble includes female vocalist Thongxhio Mansione and master khene player Kamsueng Syhanone, and occasionally they add lute and percussion. Khamvong Insixiengmai was born in 1947 in Champhone, a district in the city of Savannarhet in Laos in Southeast Asia.
