This recording features singers Khamvong Insixiengmai and Thongxhio Manisone. They are joined by Khamseung Syhanoneon khene (khaen), harmonica-like sounding free-reed bamboo instrument. Also featured are the phin, or plucked lute, and cymbals.
The opening track is a traditional melody solo for a bamboo "harmonica" called the khene or khaen (a three-foot long bundle of fourteen or sixteen bamboo tubes enclosed in a carved wooden windchest, covering one or more finger holes at a time).
The music presented is very traditional, but that is not to say it is "stuck in time." The music of this region lives on improvisation, particularly the lyrical content provided by the singer (…). It also has that certain something that jazz musicians often refer to as "swing," that anticipation of the beat that is especially noticeable in the khene playing.
