Joi Gilliam released her first album The Pendulum Vibe, in 1993. For her sophomore effort, The Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome, She and creative partner Dallas Austin, brought in the assistance of Fishbone to be her backing band. But when EMI folded, so did the release of the album. Gilliam then joined ex-Tony Toni Tone front-man Raphael Saadiq, as a member of the hip hop/R&B group Lucy Pearl. In 2000, Gilliam's third album, Star Kitty's Revenge, was again a victim of shake-ups in the record business. She then signed with Raphael Saadiq's boutique label, Pookie Records, and recorded Tennessee Slim Is the Bomb. After issues with the album's release on Pookie Records, Joi then released the album on her own independent label, Dirty Debutante/Joilicious on March 28, 2006.
