On the boundary of Europe and Asia lays Orenburg, on the River Ural. This city is home to The Content Label's latest musical discovery, Evgeniy Litke, who goes by the name Fiji. Inspired by the creativity and beats of artists like DJ Krush as well as the natural environment of his surroundings, Fiji starting making dense tracks based on deft rhythm programming and moody soundscapes. He has worked with the likes of Long Arm, Tinavie, pianist Eugenia Peters, and Kammerton. Peering Into The Darkness, Fiji's debut album for The Content Label, is an ambitious project years in the making.
With Dday One acting as executive producer (contributing the album's film-like sequence and art direction), Peering Into The Darkness features twelve cuts that seamlessly meld together into a sonic expedition. The album opens with gentle-yet-bracing chords and exotic accents before a loping drum beat kicks in. Titled "Between The Place, Between The Time", this track sets up Fiji's modus operandi with layers of sustained, dream-like samples and passages. Further song titles like "Depth Contemplation" and "Wading Through the Swamp of Sorrow" reveal a psychological album that invites the listener to peer within. Beautiful, soundtrack-like cuts such as "Inevitable Trajectory" and "Spread Arms In The Rain" also create the feeling of a cinematic experience, evoking images and feelings that are unique in the realm of beat-making.
