for his acoustic material, get A Toast to Those Who Are Gone and for the arranged studio stuff try Tape From California. My personal favorite is Pleasures of the Harbor but a lot of people like the live acoustic versions of those songs better, especially in the case of this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIwbeEGXj5E

Oops sorry I never check last.fm unless it's to unscrobble embarrassing things whoopsies 1. YES. Laurena is the cutest, it's ridiculously unfair how untalented she is! 2. IS IT PERFECT? I am thinking about ordering one! I wanted to see her this summer in her California June Tour but she's coming weeks before I'm even in the area. :( So stupid. 3. UGH seriously?! I hadn't noticed. Dag nabbit. That's the best song to introduce people to Julia Nunes with. B)

NO I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! I think the only songs I don't really like are the remakes of Comatose and Into the Sunshine for the exact reasons you mentioned. But I Will Go Anywhere With You is just the sweetest song oh my goodness. The lyrics in it, well all of them really, are so touching! And Fair Weather and LULLABY AUGH. I am beyond impressed with it all. Did you see her on Conan?! I cried. I wish she would go on tour in places that weren't New York and Chicago! >:( I just want to marry her. Is that too much to ask?! ugh ugh ugh

Can't help but agree with your "SUNSET-TREE-BEST-ALBUM-EVER" slogan. Gracing my ears consistently since '05.

Guess who I saw last month-ish! Yep, The Mountain Goats. :) Warming up for Bright Eyes. Who I also like, but not as much as tMG. John Darnielle has a surprising amount of energy, I love his stage presence. Didn't get to meet him, though. Maybe in the future, I guess. Oh, I know what you mean about TMBG albums. They can be so stylistically different from each other but they all have the same lyrical and melodic quality, and the band hasn't yet done anything I didn't think was creative and interesting. I hate picking faves because it's such a close call but Lincoln and John Henry both get a lot of plays. Very different sounds but both appealing. Lastly, No Answer is a demo that never made it past DAS. Which is sad because it's wonderful, I can't believe they didn't continue to work on it. Here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/j72l0j

Haha, I'm talkative. But in short bursts. ;p 1. I think I did die of happiness. By which I mean, I passed through those two days in a joyous trance and then going back to work and student loan applications, etc was like falling into cold water, haha. If money weren't a thing I'd follow them around in a bus. 2. I felt the same way! I had such high standards, They've been my life since I was 15. When The Else came out it blew my teenage mind. That's hard to top. But no, it was great. Hearkens back to their first few albums. It'll prolly never be one of my faves but it's still rad. 3. The Sunset Tree was my first tMG album! I probably listen to it the most, although Tallahasee is close. Mosdef is emotionally exhausting. One of the things I like about John Darnielle's songwriting is he makes it ok to be emotional. Some of his subjects would pass into "emo" territory in the hands of other artists, but not him. Because he's a friggen POET.

Oh yeah, I def know what you mean about it being less musically eclectic. But it has grown on me. Speaking of, I'm seeing Tally Hall twice this week :) Ah, thank you and thank you! I don't know the Mountain Goats super well but I loooove what I know. Autoclave is one of my favourites. That and This Year. And Dance Music. And Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton. And a bunch more, haha. Hey, have you listened to the new TMBG yet?

And ugh, Never Meant To Know is insanely pretty and I've longed for a "real" version ever since I heard it live a few years ago. I did a spontaneous cover of it on my roof a few days ago :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-l0wvSHdNw

I got mine in the mail a few days ago! It's sooo gooood. It IS a lot different than MMMM. More ... cosmic. And message-y, I think. Definitely less silly. And something about the production sort of bothers me. I don't think I like it as much as MMMM (although as MMMM is one of my favourite albums of all time and I've spent months of my youth listening to it on repeat, it's rather hard to beat). But it's still the same twee whimsicality only Tally Hall can produce, and I'm just glad it's finally out, haha.

Oh I forgot to mention, you can listen to every non-Pixies album he's ever done on blackfrancis.net

Oh and Bluefinger and Svn Fngrs are definitely worth checking out too. He switched back to Black Francis for those two and they're a lot closer to the Pixies than any of his other stuff, but still their own seperate thing. They're really awesome too.

I'd say that Teenager of the Year is probably his best work with or without the Pixies. It's just a wonderful sprawling mess, I love it. Dog in the Sand is a little bit Stonesy but one of his best. Show Me Your Tears is straightforward country rock but it's amazing.

Yeah he's a big TMBG fan and vice versa. Linnell plays the sax on a couple of tracks on 'Frank Black' and there's a rare-ish CD of them perfoming together out there - http://tmbw.net/wiki/Live_Thursday_June_24,_1993_10pm_EST

Oh yes, it was the best gig I've seen in ages. As for Frank Black, I dunno. Maybe it's because I'm super burnt out listening to the Pixies but I think I might actually prefer Frank's solo stuff a little bit. Yeah.

Hey man, this is in response to your question on the Elliott Smith page about his wall. Basically it still has graffiti in relation to Elliott, but is mainly just horrible spray painted graffiti nonsense by dicks over the top. Pretty sad. http://www.museyon.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Elliott-Smith-Wall-Los-Angeles.jpg
