Stephen Merritt is a truly talented songwriter, and The Magnetic Fields make beautiful music. It's only a novelty if you refuse to hear it as something more than that . . . I will grant you, though, that they're hard to get into. Merritt has never held to conventional laws of pop composition -- in fact, he mocks them outright -- and as a result a lot of his music packs a heavy learning curve.
