I’d agree with that, as I only heard about the genre for the first time quite recently. Before that, I was busy raising my homegrown kids.

Ah yes. Smell that? It’s the scent of a burning straw man. Your straw man. You’re arguing against people who don’t even exist. And why? To justify or defend your taste in music? Why do you care? Are you that insecure? Listen to what you like and stop trying to please others. You need to please yourself. The rest will fall into place.

It's always funny when insecure, immature little shits think they can shame adults by mocking their taste. I've been an Oasis fan longer than you've been alive. 🤣

Many, even long-time users on Last.fm, do not understand how the tag system works. It is essentially democratic: the tags used most often are the ones that appear. So, for example, if ten people tag Eminem as techno, but only five tag him as hip hop, then techno will show up first. That is why it is so important to tag things yourself. I use the Last.fm Mass Tagger for PC (https://sourceforge.net/projects/lastfmmasstag) to do it. The charts on a tag page are determined by which artists, albums and tracks are tagged most frequently with that term. They have nothing to do with popularity, listener counts or scrobbles. That is why the system is so vulnerable to abuse. For example, in November 2024, I was the first to use the tag "vintage pop" on Last.fm, intended for pop music from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. The top artist now is River Westin, some lad younger than me.

"Hyperpop is a microgenre, characterized by a maximalist or exaggerated take on pop music which may also draw on an eclectic range of influences across dance, hip hop, and electronic music." – Word salad that means absolutely nothing.

people who listen to hyperpop have such a high idea of themselves and will literally rip you to shreds if you listen to any artist who is even a tad bit mainstream because you're "cringe" while they're different and quirky for listening to emo boy music. speaking from experience

it's weird to define. i've never given much thought on what exactly constituted those songs. The best example i can give is christmas tree by lady gaga. it's off-putting by all definitions, right from the atonal, awkwardly compressed synth chords that greet you. Then you are bombarded with the over-the-top raunchy lyrics, while the song still gets playlisting alongside other unassuming holiday tracks. It's just the idea of having a song that's so saliently outstretched beyond the bounds of marketability, but it's also so polished and attuned to the artist's camp sensibilities. Because the song still gets trashed on by little monsters, but at the same time, there is a small group of people who've developed a post-ironic affinity. Eyes on me by celine dion is also on a similar vein, cause she's doing a ballad-centric album and comes out the blue with a dropping subwoofer. but yeah, i'm probably just rambling. I just like it when songs sound awful

ohhh, i get it! i just listened to christmas tree and eyes on me and honestly, im obsessed too. i feel like some of azaelia banks' songs have a hyperpop-ish vibe to them as well, e.g. fuck him all night. wish there were more non-hyperpop artists exploring the quirky/camp sound. thanks for the explanation, it's perfect!!😭

thank you. happy to hear there was some sense in my ramblings. a lot of azaelia's work, and 212 especially in the bridge part, also struck me as being very aligned to those eccentric qualities present in hyperpop. haven't heard the song you mentioned, but i'll def listen to it. whether she likes it or not, she makes some of the best gay music out there
