I forgot to mention Cult of Luna's excellent CD, Somewhere Along the Highway. This genre certainly takes a few listens to appreciate. My tastes are all over the place. I grew up with 70's AM radio, then prog. When 80's prog started to suck, I moved to post-punk/alternative, and then thrash, Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax/Slayer. PT/Tool/Mars Volta/Opeth turned my head completely around on prog. Like you, I'm still finding my way in modern metal. It's a lot more fractured now, compared to the 80's with Maiden/Priest etc.

I bought Ride the Lightning when it came out, and it ruined me for "regular" metal. Then I gave up on the diluted prog of the 80's. 20 yrs later I'm learning about all sorts of modern metal/prog bands. There's been a dramatic rebirth, and I feel like a beginner again. Isis and Pelican are considered "post rock", which is much in line with Agalloch -- long, moody instrumental passages, complicated and shifting, but not ornate. I have little patience with Maiden-derived metal, which is epic and dramatic, with a few exceptions.

Agalloch is remarkable. I can't believe I hadn't heard them before. I don't see Isis in your top artists. You might like their album In the Absence of Truth. I also recommend Pelican's City of Echoes. Music is such a personal thing, it's hard to guess what someone else will like. ;-)

The musical direction of The Incident is interesting. It doubles back with elements of Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, yet retains the prog ethic of Nil Recurring. A heavier path would have also been interesting -- Meshuggah doing Beach Boys. :D

Yeah, Akerfeldt and Wilson have long talked about a collaboration. That would be a dream pairing. I think the main barrier is their respective schedules. In the meantime, Blackwater Park may be the closest we'll ever get. ;-) And of course it's brilliant.

I think Watershed is a pretty good album. A little different from other albums, but kickass in its own way.
