Thanks. The used book store had a copy of 1,000 Years but I hesitated on it because I am a cheapskate and I have a million CDs already. Based on your description maybe it wa for the best. My favorite Sleater-Kinney album is One Beat, if that provides you with a basis for comparison.

Which of the Sleater Kinney successor bands are worthwhile in your opinion? I clicked on your profile because of the Kacey Musgraves comment.

And, really, you don't have to apologise for the rant - I'm sure it was entirely necessary, and as long as you felt better after it was done, that's all that matters, right? You're not exactly the first person to do that anyways... I guess even when it comes to text I seem to be really good at listening to people, haha! :D Seriously though, you can rant all you want on my shoutbox if it makes any difference, I don't mind. :) Thanks a lot! Luckily, the answer to that so far is "yes". Hope all is well with you too! Or at least gets better.

(Just in case I didn't phrase it correctly, I wrote the essays and dissertation in two separate all-nighters, and with the dissertation I actually had written 1-2 thousand words beforehand, which made it easier.) Oh my god, I'm really really sorry to hear that, Michelle. Unfortunately I don't think I can help there, either with your career choice or saying things that'll make you feel better (a skill I unfortunately seem to lack), so best of luck with getting the fuck out of Dodge ASAP (and sorry for not really having more to say there, but... yikes, that workplace is terrifying. I certainly hope so too! I'd probably not last there any longer than you do.) Yeah... I don't show up on last.fm too much myself because I mainly showed up to talk to other friends who are also not showing up as often, so there goes my main incentive. Oh shit, I hope I'm not one of them too! I'd be really angry at me if it turned out I was. (Most of whatever comments I leave aren't really meant to be serious.)

Well, I had a bit of a stressful month or two of coursework, which was mainly my fault for being so procrastinating about it - I had to write all the three essays I had to write AND my 10,000-word dissertation in an all-nighter! But I got them all done on time, and I also finished my exams (last Wednesday was the last one, actually), so now I'm basically done with uni, so I'm mostly just relaxing and doing the usual hobbies I didn't have time for because of coursework and revision. (Like, for example, right now I'm playing Lunar: Eternal Blue on an emulator - old 1994 Sega CD JRPG, second in the Lunar series; I already finished the first game, Lunar: The Silver Star.) All I really have to do is wait for my results to come in (I have to graduate with at least an upper second because I have a conditional acceptance to study for a masters' degree - same subject, same university) and show up for graduation, which for some reason got scheduled in July. (Still better than the exam schedule.)

I'm going to college! And my roommate is gay-friendly! I'm currently in a Fiona mood. I've been on Tumblr a lot. I've also been craving hairy and lanky white hipster boys. I've never encountered such people, and I don't want to! Too much negativity and stupidity amongst these people. It's too late for some people tbh. No sense can be knocked into them. I wish success with your new group! (I haven't really been active here on last.fm anymore tbh. Now I'm just here to keep track of what I listen to. Tumblr's been keeping me busy anyways.)

Otherwise, yeah, I'm alright, I finally got a chance to relax for a bit since my classes don't start next week - hoping to get more recording done in the meantime. And you? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question, I may just be not reading your text properly, but I kinda got the vague feeling you were annoyed when you wrote that reply, so I just hope I wasn't making it worse by saying something at the wrong time or anything like that. But anyways, it's nice to hear from you again! And yeah, talk to you soon!

Music-wise, well, I wasn't able to listen to much on vacation since I didn't bring my hard drive with me, but I did get more albums by Front Line Assembly, KMFDM and Ministry, because for some reason I was in a slight industrial metal phase. I also have The Police's Message in a Box, Animal Logic's second album and the 1990s King Crimson albums I was lacking, among some other stuff. 'cos my "to listen to" pile just seems to constantly expand, y'know? (Aimee Mann's in it too, jussayin'. Along with The Slits, Laleh, The Free Design... too many bands.) But I have to finish listening to No Doubt first, 'cos that's been on hold since... fuck, November, because afterwards I got sidetracked by essays, dissertation and yesterday's exam. If you mean "lately" as in "recorded during this time", no, me neither, but that's probably 'cos I'm permanently unable to catch up and lag behind in terms of following what's going on in music.

I should probably apologise as well - I kept wanting to say something but for some reason I got scared that I was gonna annoy you if I asked. Eeeysh, I'm sorry to hear about the terrible job, but it sounds like you're managing and I doubt I can help with anything. That's a good idea... what'd teaching be like? I've had a few people comment that maybe I should try that as a career, but I never really saw myself doing it... (I may be good at hiding it, but I'm still nervous about being in front of an audience.) My dissertation's a comparative study of left-wing parties moving increasingly towards the right in the UK and Germany in the post-Cold War era and attempting to tie that into some larger points about how this post-Cold War "consensus" (contrasting with the actual post-war consensus) is damaging because it enables the unquestioned spread of neoliberal globalised capitalism and the dismantlement of welfare states, etc. and so on.

Hey, Michelle? Whoa, it's been nearly a year since I said anything. Really sorry about that. I got caught up this month in writing my dissertation proposal and studying for an exam that was today, but now that they're both done I thought I'd check in, if you don't mind that is. So, how're you doing?

I looked up more images of her, she's absolutely endearing and lovely. And thanks. Music's the main thing I geek on, other than studying a little philosophy and reading up on the occult. Congrats on attaining your Master's in English. I was an English major once, but these days I'm going for Social Work. I suppose I fancied myself an English professor for a little while, but then I finally pulled my head outta the clouds and opted for sticking it in the dirt instead.

Been listening to Eli, eh? Poverty train is fantastic. What's this, Laura isn't high in your overall, but very high for your last three months list... could that mean that you just discovered her? Then I know what you're going through, or went through. For me it was one night of dropped jaw and exclamation: HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS WOMAN!? Heh. Anyway, welcome to the group.

You're most welcome, I am actually scared of Gold Dust though... old Tori songs sung with her new voice... I shudder at the thought. Yet I'll still buy it cause I've come too far to quit buying Tori Amos albums and bashing them now.

Have you heard Fiona's "The Idler Wheel..." album? I just listened to her interviewed on The Marc Maron podcast. She is quite an amazing and lovely woman.

(I mean, I try to stick to criticising arguments instead of personal insults, but sometimes I fail.) Preach on, you've hit the reason I don't bother reading comments on news stories myself. (Aurgh, the stinking void that is Yahoo News comments.) I really wish those kitchen jokes would die... preferably in a nuclear bombing. (So fucking annoying.) Oh, it's okay, no need to apologise for ranting, I tend to do it as well, I think. Way I figure it, getting all that written down and knowing somebody else'll read/listen to it, it can help, right? :) Well, on a lighter note, your page convinced me to try listening to Aimee Mann, so that's awesome. Thanks! (indirectly) I have all her albums ('cept the live one) and I'll try to get on it soon (I also have to re-listen to Regina and Fiona since they both put out new albums but it's been so long since a complete discography-binge...). Well, see ya soon then! Good luck with work, and hope things work out better for ya in the coming weeks!

I did also notice one case of what you mentioned, and... uh, I hope I don't sound insulting when I say this, but I was kinda surprised that you didn't respond angrily to it. I guess it could just be cluelessness, after all. (If anything, I'd probably deserve it more. I got real pissed by a comment on a My Darkest Days song accusing people of "not having a sense of humour", and I spent three more comments ranting about how "sheesh, you don't have a sense of humour!" is *for some reason* the go-to excuse for assholes to try and let songs with misogynist lyrics off the hook, and ended by saying that Ween were way better. I wouldn't be surprised if I got nasty comments in return since, oi, I tend to sound like an asshole when I do this. [Sounding like an asshole in the process of calling other people assholes. That's fun.] It probably makes me sound like a hypocrite when I agree about not personally attacking people for taste, but I'm pretty sure I mostly attacked that terrible argument.)

Hey, Michelle, glad to hear from you again! I'm sorry to hear that. Though I guess I can't really help with anything, so I'll just hope things go better for you in the coming weeks. (I'm on vacation back in Bucharest now for the rest of the summer. I don't know yet what my exam results are, and I fucked up applying for student housing so now I have to hope plan B works.) Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about that! Thanks for reminding me! Damn, fuck Dave Mustaine. I'm glad I never was a huge Megadeth fan. Right seconded on both of those, I love Hole as well, and Morrissey was always the worst member of The Smiths (and his singing sucks too). Yeah, SM pointed me to it, and I have to admit it does sound interesting! I wonder if I'll end up liking it more than The Director's Cut, that's for sure. I did kinda notice you weren't here in a while, but I just assumed that's because you were busy with work or something like that.

"Falling Free" is simply beautiful, and it actually sounds like something off of Ray of Light, unlike the vast majority of the Orbit collaborations on MDNA. "I'm Addicted" is simply...addictive. I have to agree with you on Regina's new album, but I still think it's above average. I briefly rediscovered Regina's older stuff. I was amazed at how different it sounded. It sounded raw and sorta improvised. I like Regina's polished stuff too. What are the stand-out tracks to you? I thought "All the Rowboats" was very suspenseful. "Oh Marcello" is quite weird but endearing, and I love the interpolation of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", my favorite Nina Simone song. The "shake it baby" lyric from "Ballad of a Politician" was stuck in my head for a while. was happy that Fiona finally released a new album. I was waiting to listen to her for a while because I knew that she would release a new album eventually. (...)

I'm currently on summer break. It's good to have a break from school. I'm looking forward to senior year, though. I got all the classes that I signed up for! Anyways, I do agree that MDNA was an improvement over Hard Candy. The album as a whole grew on me, even though there were stand out tracks from the first listen. The most notable example is "I Don't Give A". I initially thought that was the worst song on the album, but it later became one of my faves. I adore Nicki Minaj's rap on it, and it led to me checking out Nicki's solo stuff. I actually love "Gang Bang". I was obsessed with it ever since I heard a 1-minute snippet of it. I understand that it's not for everyone, especially since it's so different from what she's done before. I love the banjo and the 8-bit sounds in "Love Spent". I really wish Madonna performed it on the MDNA Tour... A lot of people agree that it was a highlight on the album. (...)
