Dream Theater is a little heavier than Vangelis or Jarre - most of its tracks can be categorized as progressive metal. I recently discovered their cover of entire Dark side of the moon Pink Floyd album. If you want to try DT, check out Metropolis Pt. 2 album - it's kind of progressive metal opera, in some moments very gentle.
