Yeah, I never understood why they deleted all the groups. It was a huge part of community life on this site. They always said they were going to bring it back but that was years ago. I didn't go to anything for about 1,5 - 2 years but I've been pretty active in 2022. I have been to a concert, comedy gig, museum, theatre monologue, ... I've also been meeting up with several friends, it's good to be back in the realm of living. :) As far as movies goes, my watch count has declined heavily since the pandemic. Last year I deciced to work on my Spanish so I started watching a lot shows which lead to films taking a backseat. Good news is that I saw some great shows and my Spanish skills improved. This year I'm doing the same with Italian!

Same here! Last.fm used to be a mucher bigger part of my life when it was more interactive and community based but I still come around here for nostalgic reasons. Plus, it's really cool to see my library grow over the years! I'm doing okay atm. It's been rough at times in the past few years but that goes for everyone. There are things to look forward to and the sun is shining again so everything will be okay. :) Hope you've been well. I have missed our conversations over the years you know.

And that quote is beautifully exemplified by films such as It's A Wonderful Life. People always think you just live your life without realizing that you actually touch other people's lives as well. Even hermits like us! She definitely fits the bill: she's pretty, sexy, funny, an introvert, likes classic Hollywood, ... Like most guys I enjoy female curves (hips, posterior, ...) but I have to echo Miss Kendrick's sentiments. She scores pretty well in that department herself. :p

That would be hilarious. Imagine a whole new division in the classic social structure. The typical stereotypes like in the high school movies would be: the jocks, the nerds, the goths, ... the cinephile couch potatoes. :D Yeah, it's pretty hard for 8 billion people to all be remembered but I think a lot of great people don't get that posthumous recognition (or feel the need for it). You can play an important part in somebody's life just by being yourself. As you can gather from my list of favorite actresses, I have a thing for brunettes. ^^ I like long(er) hair, cute smile, eyes you can drown and http://67.media.tumblr.com/e019fc59a6a3bf764d8186c5e5c60dc3/tumblr_ngctmyJiSy1qdiaboo8_250.gif

It's the search for the meaning of life. Everybody wants to be remembered, to have accomplished something. The idea that you've made an indelible mark on society. I do wonder if my cinephile couch potato quote will still be remembered in 300 years. :p On the topic of femme fatales, which one prickles your fancy? What's your "type"? :p

Glad my words will live on! I should get my own Goodreads page one day. ^^ Well, older men are supposed to be distinguished looking. Soon you'll have to keep all the women from falling at your feet. Let's just hope they look like femme fatales but aren't as devilish. ;-)

That's true, it's much easier to find kindred spirits and start communicating (both for good or evil). I don't think I would've ever befriended a Swiss cuckoo if it hadn't been for the internet for example. :p I'm only an occasional football fan but I'll probably watch the Belgian matches. I'll low key root for the Swiss as well. ;-) I could say we've hit a new low with the hooliganism but that wouldn't be true unfortunately. I'll just continue to enjoy my movies & movies & books from my safe and sound fortress of solitude. Ah, the life of hermit is calling to me.

Globalisation does have its good points. You can see a lot of people finding comfort and love in times of hardship. Like after Grimmie's death the YouTube community, which she was part of, really banded together. I haven't seen much footage of old ladies crossing the street either. :p But that doesn't need to be documented either. Everything is documented these days to accommodate the continuous stream of (bad) news we're so addicted to. Well, I guess that's another discussion. On a lighter note, are you following Euro 2016?

I see what you mean. Art can give comfort, take away our troubles for a little while and it can even cultivate and educate. Like when they used the arts to boost moral during World War II for example. I'm not one to give up, I've seen too much shit in my personal life. There's always light at the end of tunnel. All the violence is also caused by a minority, often loners even. Like we've mentioned before, globalisation brings all the terror from around the world into our living room. No one can carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.

If you look at the media in general it's all about sensationalism in order to get money. Which headline will be the best clickbait, which footage is the most horrifying, ... A great example is the fact that most American news shows have 2 anchors who present an item. It's turned into pure entertainment. Yes, I agree! It's like the fact that hundreds of people have lost their lives due to gun violence these past months is secondary. Politics isn't about representing the people anymore, it's putting your ideas and yourself ahead. Yes, there is art but even there you can't be safe anymore apparently. All the violence and hatred seem so pointlessly directed at innocent people.

After seeing Regression and Colonia I'm up to date again. And I was finally able to fully finish Audrey Hepburn's filmography recently btw. :-) That's true, the Harry Potter saga could count as one film to a certain extent. The Bling Ring is pretty shallow, as you could imagine given the subject. I think it succeeds in conveying its message but that doesn't necessarily make it an interesting film. We need our daily fix of terrorist attacks, shootings, floods, ... or else we're not "entertained". Everybody will be talking about the shootings this week and the gun law debates will be fired up but next week we'll move on to the next drama. I fear there is no end in sight as long as that gun lobby holds the USA in its power. The Grimmie murder hit me harder than I would of have thought. She was my age! I can't fathom it.

It's like all hell has broken loose over there.

Of course you have a cuckoo clock, it's just euh ... at the shop. Yes, that's it! You take such pride in your cuckoo clock that you take it to the shop every year for its annual check up. Regression felt a bit underwhelming tbh. I'm not that into films about cults and rituals in general and this one didn't really add much to the genre. I had expected a little more with such a strong cast. I quite liked the idea of mass hysteria but it wasn't really executed to its fullest potential. Hawke's character just figured it out at the end of the movie and that was that. :p

It's a fact that Audrey was a big chocolate aficionado. One the first things she remembered from the World War II liberation was the smell of English cigarettes and the chocolate she was given by the soldiers. I don't know if she fancied Swiss or Belgian though. It's true that a lot of great performers settled in Switzerland. The cuckoo clock must be quite appealing after all. :-)

Donnie Darko is one of those movies I saw when I was still too young to fully comprehend it but it did leave a lasting impression. I mean, that's a rabbit you don't easily forget. :p I remember you turned 30 last year because so did Anna Kendrick. I remember dates by linking them to other things/people. ^^ I actually liked Colonia a lot. It was the first substantial role for Watson since The Perks of Being A Wallflower. Let's hope she continues down this path! I didn't know anything about the story beforehand so it was interesting to do a little reading afterwards. Right, now I remember. If you tasted our fries and beers then you already know plenty about Belgium. Or maybe chocolate is missing from that list. :p I think you joined my 'Classic Hollywood' group and I sent you a shout to welcome you to the group. Wow, 2013! We're getting old haha.

I've always been wise beyond my years. ;-) My first was probably Breakfast at Tiffany's but The Children's Hour might have been the second. We do know how to eat and drink over here! I've probably asked you this before but have you visited Belgium? The disappearance of groups on last.fm is one of the worst parts of this beta site. It's a great way to meet kindred spirits. Heath Ledger was an amazing actor so it should be pretty interesting. I started watching it a few years ago and never finished, I was too young probably. "The Children's Hour" is actually the key film I credit for my love of Classic Hollywood. I already liked Audrey but that film made me a fan of Shirley Maclaine and one thing lead to another. Not a bad person to share a birthday with. :) I will be turning 22 actually. :p No, it's a week of festivities in the old city centre of Ghent. Free concerts, comedy nights, plays, french fries and lots of booze. The jazz festival is called Ghent Jazz Festival, but I'm not going this year. There is nobody in particular I want to see and it's pretty expensive so. If I like the photographs I'll send you some. That's for certain, films will always be there! And books as well for that matter.

I'll keep those in mind if I'm in need of some new movies. I recorded 'Brokeback Mountain' a while back so that's one more check as well. It baffles me that "The Children's Hour" isn't in any lists! I don't know what you think but it's one of my favorite films. A truly remarkable piece of cinema for its day. I don't have any plans in particular except for the usual stuff like 'De Gentse Feesten' and my birthday. I've been thinking about maybe travelling a little around Belgium. Find some nice places to walk and I could take my camera. Que sera sera! :)

Switzerland sounds like an amazing place to walk! ^^ The weather has been extremely bad the past week, there wasn't a single day I didn't walk in the rain. According to the weather report there is also no improvement in sight. Nature seems to be telling me not to be healthy. :p I also always carry a book in my backpack for when I'm on the train or have to wait somewhere. It's kind of a comforting thought to have a book on hand. PS: I watched 'Flashdance' ... and liked it.

The picture and quote go hand in hand, like they were by the same person. Yeah, social media are very fake and deceiving most of the times. People only put the good stuff online in a "look at me" kinda way. Your comment reminds me of Catfish as well, talk about pretending! I walk almost everywhere, which is cheaper and healthier (although we've had rain every day the past week). :p Any beautiful places on your walking route or is it more urban? It's true that classics are really easy to find online but reading on the computer annoys me after a while. I only do it when I have to read for college and don't want to buy the books. I've actually found most of the books I had to read for my French class on a French torrent site, which amazed me. Some people always carry one of their favourite books with them, do you do that?

Yeah, people use their smartphone on the train, on the street, at college/work, ... basically everywhere. It makes me think of a cartoon where a man is staring at his phone and his is just being drained. I can't seem to find it right now but this fits the bill as well: http://nestorladouce.tumblr.com/image/135977102894 I think people are afraid of being left behind. It's the same with having to have an opinion on everything without being informed. Idiocy is tiring. :p I don't leave my house that often either but you have to from time to time though. It can feel quite refreshing to have a walk after a computer marathon. Do you read all your books on your pc? I still prefer paperbacks, it's less tiring I find. Kieslowski films are always very poetic and visually pleasing. Jacob stars in Rouge as well so there's even more eye candy coming your way. ;-)

Ah, don't get me started on phones. People really seem to be on them 24/7! I quite like the feel of leaving the house and not being on a computer for a couple of hours. I'll be the first to admit that I spend way too much time on my laptop but I don't take it that far. Yeah, people like sensation and there's more of that in drama. There should be a news broadcast with good news and one with bad news, then you could decide which one to watch based upon your mood. ;-) It's always good to brush up on your ostrich knowledge haha. I noticed you watched 'La Double Vie de Véronique' recently, did you fall for Irène Jacob like I did? :-)

Yeah, there is such an overdose of information that you need to start picking what's relevant to you. Due to the globalisation we are also confronted with all the world's problems. If there's an earthquake on the other side of the world you can bet on it that we'll see devastating footage of the aftermath. This was less the case a few generations back. (And I'm going to be a little bit of a pointdexter here but the ostrich thing is a myth though. I believe we have Looney Tunes & Disney to thank for that :p). That's true but it's nice when you watch an original tape and hear the crackling soundtrack and see the little imperfections on the screen. Digital shouldn't replace analogue completely. 15 euros is ludicrous, it's even pricy for a DVD. Yeah, a local student cinema where I live shows classics and only asks 3 euros. :)

That tendency to forgot horrible memories has become a necessary coping mechanism over the years. As humans we are so aware of death, illness, suffering, ... that we can't really handle all of it. Just try watching the news without one atrocity being mentioned. It seems that love for Classic Hollywood has become a digital one. The movies have become easier to share and it's also easier to connect with kindred spirits but it would be fun to have face to face conversation with fellow OH lovers. :p Or go see a Bogart on the big screen for example. Mel Brooks told this great story in an interview that he could grab something to eat, go the movies and have an icecream on half a dollar. :)
