BIOGRAPHY:

Tomi Simatupang is an Indonesian-German composer, singer, guitarist, drummer, bassist, music producer and lyricist. Simatupang's trilingualism (Indonesian, German and English) as well as his "triculturalism" (Javanese, Batak and German) are reflected in the eclecticism of his art.

Born in Java, he grew up fully immersed in Gamelan and his father's tape collection ranging from The Beatles to The Mothers Of Invention. Landung Simatupang, one of Indonesia's leading actors, also inspired his son to improvise and compose poetry from a very young age.

Upon moving to suburban Germany, which was perceived as a "culture shock", the then 10-year old's creativity flowed into nonverbal music. In highschool, Tomi developped a strong passion for Jazz and learnt to play the drums and later guitar. Apart from a year of private Jazz lessons and workshops by Detmold Jazz icon Fritz Krisse, most of Tomi's musical studies were absolved by reading music theory books and by imitating Jazz players from records while still attendinghigh school.
Further Jazz studies included workshops with James Moody, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Terry Lynn Carrington, and Douglas Sides. Furthermore, he has received training in Contemporary Gamelan from Paul Gutama Soegijo and in microtonal and electronic composition from Marc Sabat
at Universität Der Künste - Berlin.

Since his move to Berlin in 2001, Tomi has been working as a solo musician, a bandleader of his groups "That Tomi Simatupang Incarnation" (Berlin) and "zJawy" (Warsaw) and as a session musician. That Tomi Simatupang Incarnation has peformed for notable cultural events such as "Jakarta Berlin Arts Festival", "Über Lebenskunst" and Wassermusik.

Tomi has performed in many countries as a bandleader and as a sideman, including venues like Expo Shanghai, Paradiso, Volksbühne and Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
Tomi was portrayed in Uli M. Schueppel's documentary "BerlinSong", along with six other musicians, which premiered at Berlinale 2007.

He also collaborated with iconic American Poet Anne Waldman, award-winning Indonesian writer Ayu Utami and actor and father Landung Simatupang.

Tomi has released three albums and many singles. He can be heard on dozens of Albums of a long list of musicians including Masha Qrella, Susie Asado, Clark Nova, Nathan Vanderpool, Einar Stenseng, Fancie, Kat Frankie, Jimmy Trash Orchestra and Ersatzmusika.

As a solo musician, Tomi's personal style is located somewhere between Singer-Songwriter, Jazz, Dadaism, free improvisation, Shoegaze and many others.
Surprise has always been an integral part of Simatupang's life appearances - solo or with his bands: That Tomi Simatupang Incarnation (Berlin) and zJawy (Warzaw)

His arrangements for That Tomi Simatupang Incarnation and zJawy touch on a broad range of styles. Techniques and methods that have been used in his latest compositions were derrived from the works of Sun Ra, Olivier Messiaen, Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley and Harry Partch, but also from African music as well as traditional music from the Indonesian Archipelago and from all over the world.
Despite the artist's eclecticism and sometimes rather scientific approach to composition,
Tomi's recordings and live performances are known to be to be accessible, recognizable
and captivating to the common person without any musical training.
