This might actually be the greatest Stones album, and, in my opinion, is no doubt Jagger's best work. His political lyrics were timely enough to make them resonate with its messy time period, but also vague enough to make them still relevant. His sexual lyrics were disgusting enough to disturb you, but not enough to make you vomit and turn off the record. His take on country blues, either straightforward ("No Expectations") or with comedic edge ("Dear Doctor") , was also very tasteful. Then there's of course the heavenly opener "Sympathy for the Devil", which alone puts him into songwriting Hall of Fame. Mundanity and omnipresence of evil hasn't been that beautiful since Milton or Bulgakov. Keith's compositions are on fire through and through as well... An A+ record.

i love that in the middle of so much progressive rock, psychedelic and experimental music, the stones focused in mastering their roots: blues and southern music. it is undeniable they did their own thing.

"undeniable they did their own thing" ????? Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Music From Big Pink, CCR's self titled all came out in 1968 prior to Beggars Banquet. The Stones were completely in sync with what was happening at the time.

with "did their own thing" i mean that they did what they wanted to. they released a psychedelic album before beggars banquet but they clearly felt more comfortable going back to where they started. i acknowledge the band, creedence, etc. i love those guys as well.

This is the album where the Stones finally started backing up their claim of the band's long-time brag of "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band". Such an amazing album from start to finish, and it would only get better with their next two albums!

Please vote up the original (off-white cover with the cursive text) artwork! The toilet one only appeared on later reissues.

I know, but I think it's more accurate and preferable to use the artwork that was used for the original issue rather than one that wasn't released until many years later. Apparently more people agree with you than do with me, though.

Regards to the cover, the toilet's one was meant to be the original initially, but the record label rejected it after a lot of discussion. It didn't appear comercially until the 2003 release.

Godlike album. Everyone rightly talks up "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Street Fighting Man" (that riff, my god), but for me it's the Blues/Country/Skiffle stuff that really puts it over the top. No one could beat the Stones at this point at playing stuff like "No Expectations," "Dear Doctor" and "Prodigal Son." The only song that I don't love on here is "Stray Cat Blues," which just feels to me like a self-conscious attempt to live up to their "bad boy" reputation/be "shocking." Solid riff, though.

That white cover is awful, it's too dull to represent what is inside. I guess people got used to it after 40 years.
