Producer, songwriter, musician and Balearic DJ sound pioneer Phil Mison aka Cantoma has championed the chill-out music genre since its inception in the early-90s, after being inspired by listening to jose padilla at the cafe del mar. His self-titled artist release on Quango is a lush 11-track debut offering delicious gems such as Balafia, Overtime, and Pandajero.
Mison, who began his storied DJ career at Londons famed Milk Bar in 1991 , segued into producing after a decade dj-ing around the world and touring with bands such as Leftfield. In 1995, he released the first of his Soundcolors compilation, the groundbreaking series that featured electronic music, mixed for mood over the traditional beat match. Ten compilations later, including Real Ibiza compilations 3 through 7, Mison has exported this island flavor into crafting an original artist album. He also currently records as Reverso 68 and Frontera , with pete herbert.
A superb talent who fits nicely into the world of Latin and Chillout. It's thanks to Afterlife sticking remixes on his albums that I found out about Cantoma for his remix work on "Miracle". Phil creates a very relaxing style of music which I've really grown attached to over time. His debut album is a great intoduction to what he can make on his own.
I'd say that this is probably my favourite Chillout artist right now. Afterlife was good, but somehow, Cantoma hits a little deeper in terms of visions aswell as sound. Mison has such a magnificent sound to his music. Some of my favourite tracks by him are "Essarai", "Moonsmith" and "Cosmopole". His album is definately a great place to start if you are new to the world of Chillout, let alone Cantoma.
