MINI POPS JUNIOR

is a duo project, consisting of loop artist TOBIAS VETHAKE (SICKER MAN, BLAINBIETER) and saxophonist JAN HUPE.

Nearly ten years ago, in a sea of psychedelic jazz cascades and noisy soundscape monsters, a drum machine from the 1960's called "MINI POPS JUNIOR" served as the only anchor for Tobias Vethake and Jan Hupe in their sonic explorations.
After contributing recordings to the Label Samplers BLANK MUSIC 'quality is punk' (2004) and 'afterglow' (2005) and the sophisticated 'crew missing' (2008), MINI POPS JUNIOR are back to roughness with their second album 'the lost weekend'.
"(…) improvised music is on the one hand always an emotional snapshot, a picture of a moment. On the other hand it reflects a whole lifetime with all experiences and disappointments, because to react immediately and directly, you have to act from the depths of your subconscious."

On 'the lost weekend' MINI POPS JUNIOR are floating in a wasteland in between Jazz, Krautrock, Ambient und Punk, sounding as if CAPTAIN BEEFHEART would join the CLUB of GORE.
Saxophone sighs are embedded with dark tremolo guitars, interrupted by stumbling beat fragments and distorted noise clouds. Tense slow motion.

how do they do it? overdubbing a series of bohren and der club of gore-esque improvs atop atop atop one another. sounds like some elseworld version of bernard herrmann at times, where they’ve dug up his corpse, attached him to some turntables playing the taxi driver score and fed electricity through it.

it’s all very scratchy and late-night creepy. a real feeling of abandonment, of the horror of urban sprawl. all very 3am berlin, barely warmed with jagermeister and the skeletal rattle of the u-bahn acting as post-club metronome to ringing ears as you traipse through empty snow streets with only graffiti to semiotically, metaphysically and fearfully guide you.
with sampled sneezing. y’know.

hands down the best shit i’ve listened to this weekend.
